Hello, I've just found out today that my city council has voted to allow residence to house up to 6 laying hens. ok, yay! This was in my local paper. The next sentence said "The council has yet to determine a cost for residents who want to raise the animals."
I guess first off, I'd like to...
Unexpected life upset. Must place my 27 laying hens, free. They are sex-linked Gold Stars, will start laying the end of Aug/first part of Sept. They are very docile and friendly. 515-291-6738 Lisa
There's going to be a couple of times this summer when I'm gone and my mother will be taking care of my chickens for me. I have 27 laying hens. I have a 3.5 gallon typical red/white plastic waterer and I know right now that my mom will never be able to fill it, flip it and hang it up. :-(...
k, so I already ordered them.
I did not build my coop yet but I will. When I lived in IA, I ordered Gold Star chicks from Hoover Hatchery which are advertised to be extremely docile and they were! They were awesome, so now since I moved to NC, I still wanted to order the same kind...
Coop building time again. I had help the first time but this time I'm on my own.
Question # 1: When I see these coop designs with nesting boxes that you access from outside the coop by lifting up a lid, what do you do framing wise to support the nesting box? I'm not getting that. Even...
I want to try meat birds for the first time this year, I've already decided that I want to go to a processor for the butchering. I'm in central Iowa, Ames area, I was intending to get my birds butchered at Golly's in Maxwell but I just called there and they are no longer butchering chickens...
I'm thinking maybe it is. I will be really bummed if it is. Here is an excerpt from craigslist, their prohibited list:
# Pet animal parts, blood, or fluids - including but not limited to stud/breeding service
#Non-packaged food items or adulterated food.
These are the 2 items I found on...
I need some advice on what to do here. First off, I have 2 chicken mentors that have been helping me get started all along with all my stupid questions, so I've made it this far. LOL!
Basically, I built the coop the size of a sheet of plywood, 4' x 8' = 32 sq. ft. Here's a pic of the coop...
These fresh homegrown eggs are definitely different than store bought eggs (we all know that)! But we're doing some xmas baking, candy and cookies and some sweet breads and my mom and my DH think that the fresh eggs are making everything come out too hard. So, I was told to ask on the board...
Dumb newbie question. Today was the first day with snow. We got about 2 inches so far last night, with predicted 2-5 inches total. Its the nice slow falling kind of snow like the way you probably imagine winter to be if you've had no experience with it. Virtually no wind and warm so the snow...
What am I supposed to do? Its so frustrating. I have 4 barn cats and 1 dog. The dog is under constant vigilance, she is not out unattended, she's smart, she **GETS IT** that she is not allowed to chase the chickens so that's ok.
But of the 4 cats, all adults, there is one, Domino, that just...
Does anyone want to share some recipes for an egg bake type of thing? Something to whip up for a breakfast, throw it in the oven, then when you take it out and serve it, its yummy and everyone is real impressed.
Tomorrow morning at 10 am, I am going to be shown how to butcher a chicken by a person who's "in-the-know". We're actually going to butcher her 3 spent hens. My friend is going to do the first one to demonstrate, then I'm going to do the 2nd one, then there will be another newbie coming, and...
Say, for instance, that I have too many eggs and I don't want to waste any. Can't I crack them open, beat somewhat to mix the yolks and whites then freeze it like that? I remember working for the food service in college and they always used liquid eggs, kept frozen which you'd have to thaw the...
I guess the rule of thumb is 3 chickens per nesting box, is that right? So, if I go by that, technically I'm short 1 nesting box but my coop is all feng shui with 3 nesting boxes. What's gonna happen if I stick with only 3 boxes and 13 chickens?
thanks.
I'm fairly happy with how the coop turned out. I still have to paint some of the trim boards on the edges, but here it is:
Ta-Da!!!
I'm showing this side, there's a window on each side for good ventilation. Then see, when my boss started building it I was just going to paint it but then we...
Hello, I am one happy chick to have discovered this website. Actually some pony girls brought it up on ultimatedressage.com, that's how I found out about it. I live in IA and otherwise have horses, this is my first foray into fowl.
So, I've been learning alot. I copied a pattern posted here...
I'm new and I'll post pics of my coop very soon but for now, I want to make the run but all of the pics I've found here and online don't show me a close-up so I can't tell what type of nail or screw to use to attach the wire to the 2 x 4's.
Thanks in advance.
