    Black Australorp source recomendations

I hope you found your australorps. I ordered 10 from Tractor Supply last October. They began laying at about 24/25 weeks. I only kept 3 since I live in the city and did not want to 'over do' it. They have not been around other chickens, so they only hear my quiet voice and no other chicken...

    Pigeon Questions

I just had to respond to this post by saying what my grandson said when their betta died. He is now in a 'betta' place!

    They smell so bad

Simply buy some cheap top soil from big box stores and spread a bit on top each day. It will keep flies to a minimum and keep most smells at bay. And it creates wonderful garden soil.

What Incubator is best for Quail?

The Brinsea Eco 20 is very consistent and easy to use. I have used LOTS of incubators over the years, but this is the best!

Anyone selling blue, silver or platinum coturnix?

Are these by chance jumbo birds or the normal size? They do look like beautiful birds! Not a bad deal to get a start of these.

    Russian Red Kale

I have been growing a small patch of Russian Red Kale. It is absolutely delicious! Easy to grow and bug resistant, too. I discovered that you can simply remove a leaf, place in water and it will grow roots in about a week or two. So I keep it going by putting a few leaves in one my...

    Least stinky quail feed

I have raised my few coturnix for 3 weeks now on Manna Pro feed. They have done well and the smell has been manageable. I purchased some Nutrena gamebird feed (all I could get) and the smell is horrible now. It is 28% protein. What is the least 'stinky' poop producing feed that is available?

Length of time in the brooder for coturnix quail

Thanks for the response. Amazingly they are doing very good at this point with no extra heat. I guess the small tote and with a towel over the top and their body heat it is sufficient. They show no signs of being uncomfortable and are eating well. If they were in any other type cage I would...

Length of time in the brooder for coturnix quail

I have 7 jumbo Texas A&M chicks. The are two weeks old today and almost fully feathered. They are in the house at this point (in a plastic tote) and we keep the temp at 70 degrees or so night and day in our house. I turned off the heating lamp yesterday and made sure that there were no...

    Help!!! Girls viciously attacking males

My solution to these problems is to take offending bird and clip a small portion of their top beak with fingernail clippers. It does not hurt them and will keep them from killing the other birds for a few weeks til it grows back. Normally it puts a complete stop to the problem with that bird.

How do I get my male coturnix quail to stop crowing in the morning!?

I had about 20 that were 4 1/2 weeks old and they started crowing at 4 AM and I live in a small subdivision with close neighbors. At the time, I was so frustrated with the noise, that all of those males went into the freezer. I even put them in total darkness in my garage and they never...

    Red ants

Not long ago, I had some ant beds in my yard and someone suggested putting instant grits on the mounds. Believe or not, the ants disappeared and have not come back. It killed them quickly. I am sure if you sprinkle dry INSTANT grits around the area it will work. Just don't let the quail eat...

    Orchids?

Phals love bright light and humidity. They need temps of 60 degrees for two weeks at night to bloom. I keep mine outside until the temps get to 40 or so degrees, then bring them in the house. The main thing to remember is to NOT water the plant unless it has mostly dried out from the last...

    They're fighting!

One of the easiest things to do is get a pair of toenail clippers and clip the top beak back right before the little vein. They won't bleed if you do it right and they don't seem to be able to do as much damage to each other if they cannot get a good 'beak' hold on another bird. Just clip the...

Cost of feed vs amount of meat

When calculating the costs, be sure to deduct the cost of eggs that you would have paid at the supermarket and now you get for free! That might help the 'per pound' costs.

How About a Jumbo Co Op

I had some A&M white birds last year and bought some jumbo browns (by accident; thought I was buying 16 oz white birds!). Not sure if I had a unique situation, but my white A&M's had much broader and larger breasts than the Jumbo browns. The browns were big birds, no doubt, but they did not...

    introducing breeders to each other...

One way that was suggested to me and it worked, was to get a new pen (temporary if needed) and put them all together in a totally new environment. Then they seem to get along and don't have any 'ground' to protect from another bird. I guess it really is determined by the number of birds you...

    Question about cage tops

I find that normally there are no issues with them. Until someone/something spooks them. Then they will fly straight up and break their necks. Any solid roof could be a potential problem. My best pens have always been to put wire on the top under the roofing. That way they just 'bounce' off...

    Coturnix Weight

In my opinion, the Texas A&M birds normally have bigger/wider breasts than any of the other jumbos. If they are true A&M's, you can tell an obvious difference when you pick up a live bird and compare to another jumbo coturnix. Even if the A&M is only 10 oz., it will still have a wider and...
