I am sorry to hear about your hen. Have you tried putting her in a cage inside the coop? This way the flock (and her) can check each other out without her getting hurt. I would do this for a few days and then one evening put her on the roost after everyone has gone to bed. I have had luck...
My oldest girl was an Australorp. Mama Tiny was 11 years old. She just died a couple of weeks ago. I raised her from a chick. She taught me a lot about broody hens. We nicknamed her "Bristle Butt" because she came barreling out of the coop all "bristly" when she was broody. Nobody got in...
I have used fishing line for over 10 years and it works great. It looks like a giant cobweb overhead. I haven't had any attacks from the air since using it. Good luck on whatever you decide to use!
I have been using 40-50 lb clear fishing line over the top of their run. Most of it has been up for 10 years. It looks like a cobweb out there when the sun shines. Chickens have not been bothered when in their pen. :)
Thank you for the warning. I had thought of putting a divider between the two before hatching day. I am working on another cage to put Momma and chicks in when hatching day approaches.
Thank you for replying. If I get another broody :fl, I will try that. I broke down and put the 2nd hen in the cage with the first broody. They are at opposite ends of the cage and are happy.
The first broody (Maisie) is due around May 12. The 2nd broody (Midge) will be due around May 23...
I have a young EE setting on 5 eggs. She is halfway through (10 days left). I now have another EE that is broody. I really don't need anymore chicks. Can I take 2 eggs from the first broody and put under the 2nd one?
OR
Is it possible to have 2 broodies in the same cage?
Well Kiki, it would be nice if you could send it my way (Rosenberg). I see the lightning your way but nothing happening here. I have 3 loads of laundry out--think that will help?
I used to have ponies and had a Strawberry Roan gelding. I miss riding and interacting with them.
My Dad farmed with Belgians. So I guess my favorites would be the Draft horses--so much power. :)
