Topic of the Week - What do you do with all those eggs?

During high production time in summer, the surplus is sold, although sometimes I have too many even for that. I tried water glassing last summer to preserve some for my own consumption for the winter slow season and they did well for about 6 months. Once I got to the ones that had been in the...

Official BYC Poll: Is chicken keeping legal in your town?

We can have chickens, but for my zoning, I'm allowed 2. Really? What is the point in that? I would get no eggs at all in winter. Fortunately, I have good neighbors who don't care. I also live in Paradise where the Camp Fire ripped thru here about 3 years ago and destroyed most of the town...

Topic of the Week - Keeping Chickens Cool in Summer

My biggest issue is the coop. I have 3 broodies right now that do not want to leave the coop and on the hottest day (. this last week it was 105 F outside. It was about 95 F inside the coop. I have a box fan and there are 2 passive roof vents but they are clearly not adequate. I open the...

Official BYC Poll: What Are The Top Causes of Death in Your Backyard Flock?

Most of my losses have been to Marek's Disease. It's in the soil here so I only acquire vaccinated chicks or pullets at least 10 months old. Even so, I lost 2 pullets to it that were supposed to have been vaccinated. They were either missed or did not have the level of immune response needed...

    Saddle Feathers??

They all have saddle and hackle feathers. The difference is the appearance of them. Roosters typically are pointed and shiny; hens are rounded and more matt. Even hens will have pointed neck feathers (hackle) to some degree, but not usually as far down.

Official BYC Poll: Which type of waterers do you like best and why?

I prefer the automatic ones. It doesn't require me to remember to refill it. Weekly cleaning is all that is required. I am currently using this 10 gallon gravity fed one though until I get plumbing out to the chicken pen

Comment by 'Audio51' in article 'Egg Eating, What are the Causes, And How to Prevent It'

I disagree 100% !! True egg eaters are very rare and unless you catch them red-handed it should always be assumed there is another cause. Thin shells make eggs weak and a hen getting in an out of a nest box can break the egg. Additional calcium in the form of oystershell and Vit D3...

    Coryza Vaccine

Not sure why anyone would want to let their birds get sick and then treat them rather than vaccinate to prevent it.

    DOES FERMENTED FEED WORK?

I fed FF for about 5 years and felt it did save some money on feed. I would use a 5 gallon bucket and use 3 scoops of the feed, a small amount of scratch and a scoop of BOSS. Lug that to the water, add it and stir, then lug the bucket to the back porch where it would be relatively safe from...

    Call duck hatch help

The pan with the rack just has the water over it so the wet mess will go into it and not on the bedding, but I do have a hooded chick waterer very similar to the tub I can use for water. i will have to see if I can find something to adapt as a food bowl though. Thank you so much for the ideas!!!

    Call duck hatch help

The last 2 are out, but needed much help. The last one had head and shoulders out when I went to bed at 11:30 last night. It is still somewhat crusty and weak, but the yolk is fully absorbed on them both and i think they are going to do fine. Once they are a little sturdier I will move them...

    Call duck hatch help

@Pyxis ...I did double check the temp with my SpotCheck and it has been pretty reliable for me. The incubator is a Brinsea Octagon 20 so forced air with a humidity pump and auto cradle. I am surprised at how late they are but am wondering if it has anything to do with having a cooldown cycle...

So when I rechecked them 3 more had pipped. I made a hole on the 1 remaining unpipped, but it looked like that one had already died. So had one of the ones that had pipped. I have 3 more viable ducklings that are working hard to get out. I am helping them slowly and they are making...

    Call duck hatch help

I have another pipped in the last hour or so, but nearer the small end. The safety hole was what I was wondering about. All were set at the same time so I would have expected them all to be ready about the same time, but they were brought to me to hatch for a friend and not sure about age or...
