These are a few of our first chicks, Black Australorps and a Buff Orpington . Our second batch of chicks, EE's Buff Orpingtons, RIR and Silver Laced Wyandottes. Two days after they arrived I left for TN to help out my son and daughter in law with the birth of their second child. Here is...

Four Ways To Keep Your Coop Clean And Clean-smelling

Thanks GSIM for the great advice. I do most of that but not the poop board under my roosts. That is where I use deep litter the most and just clean it out once a month. I also have taken to using the vanilla scented "trees" for cars upon some advice here and it helps with flies as well as...

    Egg bound or slow down?

when our redstar had this happen she was obviously in distress. She was hunched , not eating or drinking and very uncomfortable. I took her in and gave her the warm bath a couple times, blow dried her with a hairdryer ,which takes a good while to get all the underfeathers dry at least 1/2 hour...

Best place to buy pine shaving?

Ya we go to the local saw mill and get a compressed bale for $5. it's good clean soft shavings, no dust. I have tried TSC when I can't get over the mill and theirs is more expensive and also rougher cut, more like hard chips than shavings.

Do chicken's beaks layer, peel & renew?

I don't know , haven't noticed this in any of mine but I do know that they rub their beaks constantly on the cinder blocks in their coop. Maybe she hasn't been able to file her beak down by herself. I'm sure someone on here with more experience will chime in soon.

    What is he?

GO ARMY!! This is only our 2nd attempt to keep a roo. He is only 5 months now and was awkward at first with the hens and the older ones put him in his place for quite a while before accepting him. He seems to have matured well, does the "dance of Love" and woos them before mating. He also...

    Heated Waterers

I live in a cold climate , lots of temps below freezing in winter. Used the WalMart electric dog bowl last year and it was a blessing not to have to defrost and refill frozen bowls twice a day last winter. I also put mine up on two cinder blocks so the hens don't kick so much shavings into it...

    What is he?

I have a roo that looks just like that. We got our chicks on Easter at TSC. 4 sexlink hens and 3 creamy white roos. Were told that they are Amberlinks... Being a military family our last roo was Lt Fuzz, he died in the line of duty protecting his hens from a fox. This new one is Colonel...

    i call her einstein. breed?

Wow! I dunno but she/he is sure awesome looking! No eggs yet? How old is it? Very interesting cross of some kind. The feathers do look pointy to me but I'm sure someone with more experience will help you out soon. And Leonard is a beauty too. Good Luck!

    Feeding the girls porridge

In the winter I have gotten in the habit of making a "porridge" and giving to my chicks just before bed as well. They look forward to a hot meal. I use their pellets, warm water, yogurt, sometimes leftover oatmeal, etc. and create a warm moist mash. Most important thing to them seems to be the...

Sussex and Australorp any hands on knowledge?

HI and my first chicks were Australorps. They are gentle and very hardy. I live in upstate NY and they survive the winters well here. They're nice and solid bird, compact and well feathered. . we also had 90 degree summer with high humidity and they survived that also. None of my other...

What breed will you never have again? Me? It's...

SIlver Laced Wyandottes... mine have always been very skittish and unfriendly. THey are hard to catch and handle when necssary for treatments etc. I would also say EE's also are a crazy mixed lot. Most of mine were afraid of people and only two were lovey and friendly but I would have them...

    feed at night

I don't have problems with mice in the coop, or the chicks will have a feast. I do feed them before bed , pellets in summer, hot pellet oatmeal mash in winter. Then I always put a dish of feed and fresh water in the coop for the morning. That way they can eat and drink if I don't get out...

I'm serious... I want to make winter hats for my chickens

I have been thinking of doing the same thing for mine. The last rooster we had , had such a beautiful comb and lost all his points over the cold winter. It was sad. 1/2 of my flock have rosecombs now but the other half have lovely large pointy ones and I would like them to stay that way. If...
