I hope the video plays for those interested in watching it. I enjoyed doing this project with my students a great deal. They loved it!
I'm with you Mrs. K. I'd rather just watch them. I am on my 6th and 7th roosters as I write this post. I had a clutch of egg hatch and 4 of the 10 ended up being roosters with the two older roosters I had, that made 6. We recently culled four out, including my oldest rooster, and the two...
Hi Kiki, We are fine. We were on the west side of the storm, so we stayed put. No damage or flooding rain. It was just a stormy, breezy day. Too bad our neighbors to the east did not fare as well! We dodged a very large bullet on this hurricane!
I eat my extra roosters and none of them are human aggressive. I don't need six roosters. I only need one and I have two because I like the other little black on that I have. The others made great chicken and dumplings. There is nothing in the world wrong about eating one's extra roosters...
I just saw that this thread was reactivated I live just north of Pensacola, and we were on the west side of the storm, so we stayed. The girls were out and about, except when it was really raining. The breezes weren't too bad, so we just had trash in the yard. No damage at all.
Yes, our Principal wants more "hands on" science projects this year, so I am thinking of taking my incubator in and hatching some chicks out. Ideas are to have kids keep a chart of their observations and to keep count of the days it takes for each stage of development and how many days to...
I should add that I am retiring from my federal job as of this Friday, and I will begin work with our school district as a teacher of students with EBD (emotional/behavioral disorders) in kindergarten. I've decided my classroom theme will be chickens, and I'm going to call our classroom...
Ha ha! Nice menagerie. I have three horses, numerous chickens, four cats, two rabbits and a dog. My husband calls them the welfare brigade since they come running to the back door when I open it because they know they're going to get fed. My cats are FAT because of the rodents and the cat...
We have a mutt that "kisses" our cats when we let her out. They let her, too! If she gets too rough, they will swat at her (no claws) and she backs off. All four of mine have been fixed and vaccinated, but they are feral cats and live out in the barn for rodent control.
We can't keep them all, and I think you did a wonderful job of deciding and culling him. I really liked the part about thanking him for providing food for your family and the gentle way he went. I have 2 I need to cull in the next few weeks as I don't need any more roosters and I had 2 hatch...
Well, I have cats, but they live outside with my chickens. I feed them in my chicken tractor so the chickens can't chase them away from their food. :-).
Thanks for taking the time to put this valuable information together. I hatched out 10 chicks in April and one of them is a cross beak, although I did not notice it until she was older. She seems to be holding her own, but I think I'll try trimming her beak to see if that helps her get a bit...
I feel chicken math kicking in. I'm going to have to get my incubator back out! They should be fully feathered by the time is starts to get cold.......
My chickens LOVE tomatoes! They usually get cherry tomatoes that are starting to shrivel a bit. There's plenty to go around, but they still chase each other.
