I am surprised! Chewy has the layer feed I buy for my hens. The chick feed only comes in a 10# bag tho and is waaay too expensive. Actually, both are too expensive. The layer feed is $5-$6 more for a 40# bag, depending if I do auto-ship, than what I pay at the feed store just down the road.
For...
Most chicken feed (All Flock, etc), has lots of soy in them. I can't eat eggs from chickens that have been fed soy... store bought or otherwise. I am allergic to soy so eating soy fed chicken eggs make me sick. Because of this, I need to feed my chickens organic soy-free feed (I like the idea...
I appreciate the education.👍
I guess I should come here for my questions again instead of listening to the people at the feed store. sigh They were telling me to change over when I ran out of the bag of chick feed.🙄
Okay... guess I am stuck buying more chick feed. 😑
Can you answer these question then?
Why wait until they are laying? I thought the change over was more age related?
They are 13 weeks old, when do you think is the soonest I can start them on the organic 18% layer pellet feed?
Thanks!🙂
I have four pullets, 2 EEs (one in pic) and 2 white pullets (breed? See pic), that are 13 weeks old now. I have been feeding them organic crumbles 22% chick feed. They went through it fast and I am almost out of the 40# bag I bought them. I doubt I will need a full 40# bag but I don't think the...
These pullets were bought at the feed store so I don't know how the hens (mothers) were raised or fed. This one is the runt of the 2 EE pullets I bought so you may be right? I am hoping she will be okay and not have any problems with the other hens.
Thank you for your suggestions and advice! :)
Do you have any idea as to why the second (outer) toe went crooked after I posted about her original crooked toe? Just seems odd.
Do you think she will have problems perching once she is with the rest of the flock?
Sorry, it took me forever to get a focused photo of her toes. I am free ranging them now and she is super active running everywhere.
However, since posted about her, she now has 2 toes that are bent or broken!🥺 Originally it was just the middle toe.The leg looks thinner also but that could be...
She was 4 weeks when I got her so if it is a birth defect, it was already too late to fix it. Thanks for the link. I am going to try to get a pic tonight, if I can't, I will get one tomorrow and post it.
Hmmm... I am really not sure. I guess it looks crooked but I just assumed it was broken.
If it is either of what you suggested, how will "genetics" or "improper feeding of the adult stock" affect the pullet when she is at laying age?
I will try to get a pic of her toe so you can see what it...
I just started letting my four 12 week old pullets out to free range and noticed my one of them has a broken toe. I have no idea when she might have broke it. They had, until now, been in deep pine shavings so their feet were usually hidden. She could have done it anytime before or after I...
I free range my chickens during the day and have never had a hawk attack in the 11 years I have owned my property. There is a major rodent problem around here so maybe that's the reason... the hawks, thankfully, seem to be very busy going after them instead.
We mainly have Cooper's Hawks tho and...
I figured it might be a tight space... trying to figure out how to enlarge it. Financially not in the budget at the moment tho unless I can find some used wood and repurpose it for an add on.
The 3 nesting boxes hang on the outside so I can access them from there and I only have a one gallon...
bobbi-j, this particular hen had 5 chicks and somehow a predator got in and killed-took 3 of the chicks about 3 days later. I was devastated to say the least! However, she was able to protect the two remaining chicks.
After that happened, I brought them inside every night for two weeks until I...
Top Rooster... I did that with two hens that went broody at the same time about a year and a half ago... I wasn't ready for them to set... and, they never went broody again. I really wanted at least one hen that would go broody so I am hesitant to do that to this hen... she is a such good mother...
I worry about this hen tho, because she was never totally accepted back by the others when she was put back with the flock. She is kinda a loner now. And, she got pretty thin when she was setting before, I just worry if she will have enough stamina. I did let her raise the chicks until they were...
I am curious as to what color eggs dynamo will lay... I do love the green/blue eggs of the EEs. I have 3 EE hens right now, but one lays a pinkish tan egg.
I will work on getting vertical get-aways up this week and will introduce them this next weekend.
I will also finish closing off the top...
I am wondering about my EE hen that has gone broody again. It's only been 12 weeks since she hatch some chicks. Is that normal? Can I let her go ahead and set on eggs again without stressing her too much?
