    Saving Money

Just a note. ;) Oystershell doesn't spoil. So today I paid $15 for a 50# bag, which will last my large flock about 2 years. The alternative is $7 for a 5# bag. I keep it in the can because after a year or so the paper bag deteriorates.

    Scary!

No photos, because I was too worried about Rameses's welfare to stop and take them, but I had a frightening incident that could have been a lot worse. I keep some baling twine hanging on hooks in the coop for use when I need to hang things, tie them up, etc. I don't know how Rameses got access...

Why You Can't Reason With A Rooster

13-week-old cockerel of a faster maturing breed. Dominant in his pen and starting to eye the ladies. His testicles are larger than his brain. Fortunately this young fellow was mild-tempered and well-behaved. But when they're not you really don't have much to work with to go against the...

My Son Bought Me a Chicken Coop

My birthday present. Maybe a little small, but well ventilated. 😉

    What Color Might They Be?

I got the last two Whiting True Blues from the feed store today. Stripey chipmunk chicks, one lighter, one darker. Any clue what color/pattern they might grow up to be? (The blue and splash chicks are Cochins. I didn't want to raise just two chicks just in case).

    Odds? Broody-Related

I'm hoping to get some Whiting True Blues this week if they aren't sold out before my day off. I have a broody in the box whose been sitting long enough to have chicks and was thinking of grafting them onto her. I also have a broody on the ground with chicks that are already 2 weeks old. Do...

Blue and Splash Australorp Cockerels Looking for Flocks in the NC Sandhills

Rameses II, Blue Australorp $15 From my October hatch, Rameses II is the image of his father (see ad here). The best Blue son my flockmaster has fathered, he just barely lost out to his Black brother as my next flockmaster. He’s not full grown yet, but his coloration is splendid and his frame...

Blue Australorp Rooster, Seasoned Flockmaster Looking for a New Position -- NC Sandhills

$20 in Moore County, North Carolina Rameses is a 1.5yo Blue Australorp rooster originally from Welp with a massive chest and fabulous color. I love him, but he’s currently mating with his granddaughters and I need to bring in new blood. Rameses is good with his girls, keeps the young...

Repecka! What Are You Doing Up There?

Repecka, the California White, was out of the fence when I got home from work. I didn't worry about it because she can fly. I expected her to be in on the roost at dusk. But she wasn't. So I went searching for her and finally located her -- about 14 feet up on a beam in the clerestory...

Sudden splayed legs in 10 week pullet

When I was taking scraps to the coop this afternoon I found a pullet lying down with her right foot weirdly sprawled out to the side. After managing to catch her I tried to get photos, but didn't want to restrain her too much in case panicking caused her to injure herself further. I can't feel...

2 Splash Australorp Boys, Keeping 1

I have to decide and it's a really close call. These two splash boys I hatched on January 29 are turning out quite promising at 14 weeks and I really can't see any noticeable difference. I haven't weighed them -- I'll try that tonight when I can get them after dark and keep them calmer. Anyone...

    Score! Found a Great Feeder!

I was at J.R. Moore in Gulf, NC and found an exact duplicate of my favorite, minimum waste feeder. Notice the deep pan with the inward rolled edge. These have been hard to find. The newer version doesn't have that rolled edge that keeps the feed from being billed out.

It's That Time of Year Again

I found it before it found the open door. Relocated to the very back edge of the property in the woods. Big one. I didn't take time to measure it, but probably between 4-5 feet long. Unfortunately, it will probably be back. Unless I can get permission from whoever owns the woodlands back...

How Much Do You Sell Hatching Eggs For?

I'm getting ready to post ads for my mixed Blue/Black/Splash Australorp and Australorp Cross eggs and wanted to get a good handle on pricing. I'm seeing a lot of "barnyard mix" eggs for $8-12/dozen and wondered what people here think eggs from my flock would be worth. At the moment the birds...

    Who's My Mother?

Father of all these chicks is almost certainly the Blue Australorp gentleman in my avatar, with a slight possibility of it being his black son. But my breed dividers failed in the incubator, being too short so that the babies jumped over them even before they were all the way dry, so among...
