Thanks. I never really planned to set eggs or try to hatch with an incubator in my chicken-keeping career. I realized pretty quickly I didnt have the resources to do so. (I work 10 hrs a day 6 days a week) I made sure to get hens that weren't to go broody (ha), and so I was totally unprepared...

I definitely would have, except I never really planned to hatch eggs. I didn't want to buy something I'd only use once, as at the beginning I didn't even expect the eggs to make it through bc my hen wasn't a great broody (as explained).

I almost missed this contest! Here's a pictures from several years ago when some robins made nest in our grapevine. Sorry, it had a date stamp, I tried to blur it out. If that's not okay, just don't enter my picture.

If she doesnt appear to be in pain and is eating and drinking fine, I'm sure it will eventually grow out. I believe chicken's beaks are the same as toenails or fingernails in that they dont stop growing.

Ouch! That looks painful! Does the chick seem to be in distress? I would agree that the top layer of her beak broke off, would you have any idea why? How long has it been since you noticed it?

It's pre-mixed from a local feed mill. It's what I've used for all of my chickens ever since I started over five years ago. Probably the weird egg was due to the chicken breed, after doing some research. I have several red star and I think it came from one of them.

The same food I've always fed them, along with occasional scraps, but I'm very picky with them. They hadn't had any scraps for a week.

Since last summer

I was able to remove the egg, and it looks perfectly normal.. the stuff on the outside was rubbery, and it stank a little too
