Can chickens be trained? Stupid rooster!

We have 1 rooster and 5 hens. 2 of the hens are light brahmas and the other 3 are BOs. The rooster is supposed to be a BO too but I suspect he's not pure since his coloring is kind of off for a BO. Well, I don't know where they all got the idea that we are all kinds of awesome, but they all...

My coop is hard to clean. Impossible to clean well.

Here's my coop. Here's my (65 pound) dog to give you a scale perspective. So, it's easy (enough) to clean inside the coop area. The run is IMPOSSIBLE. The only doors are the ones you can see, on the front and on the top of the left run. How am I supposed to clean it out? I am NOT crawling...

    The Brahmas have plucked butts.

We have 2 Light Brahmas and 3 BO hens, and 1 BO roo. They've all been together for almost a year now, no problems. Last week I noticed that both brahmas butts are completely bald around the vent. Looks plucked clean. The BOs are all fine. Any ideas what that's about?

This isn't a BO roo is it?

I was told that I was getting 4 BOs and 2 Light Brahmas, all pullets. Well look how this one turned out: He's huge, kind of aggressive, and WAY darker orange/reddish than the hens. He was the same color as the hens when he was a chick but has really darkened a lot. He's beautiful but not...

How long can eggs sit under a broody and still be edible?

We have one rooster and 5 hens. One of the hens is quite broody lately. I was sick as a dog the past couple of days so I didn't get eggs at all on Monday. So that means the broody sat on probably fertilized eggs from midday Sunday until midday Tuesday. Are the eggs still ok? How long before they...

First eggs just over a week ago, now nothing for 4 days?

Is it normal for them to not lay many at first? We seemed to be getting 2 every other day for a short time (maybe a week), and now we haven't gotten any since Saturday (or maybe Sunday). Is it normal for it to be sporadic when they first start laying? We have 5 hens and a rooster, and we're not...

How to tell a BO rooster

One of our BOs is bigger than the others, and her/his comb is much bigger, redder, and he/she already has the red wattles that none of his/her siblings have. He/she is 8 weeks old now. I'll post a pic later when I get home but I'm wondering if that is enough to know it's a rooster, or what else...

After a bit of trial and error, our PVC feeder is complete

We are so proud. Check out my page for instructions and more pics (the pvc-feeder page). Here's a pic of the finished product.

Is there a good place to put a PVC feeder?

I posted this on the Feeding & Watering board but I thought maybe I would get some input here. My husband and I have been trying to figure out how best to mount a PVC feeder to our coop. We're not sure where it should go. There are doors in the way all over the coop! It definitely needs to go...

Want to make a PVC feeder, but where should I put it?

My husband and I have been trying to figure out how best to mount a PVC feeder to our coop. We're not sure where it should go. There are doors in the way all over the coop! It definitely needs to go either under the coop, in the coop, or in the covered run (the one on the right)...but how would...

Chicks are out in the coop! *added more pics*

We moved them out there today! (gulp) Yesterday we spent about 5 hours fixing the coop up to our liking. We added sand all along the ground, and leveled the runs and the coop really carefully. We also added the hardware cloth apron along the bottom. We screwed it with screws and washers to the...

Sand or pine shavings in the coop?

We put sand down in the run but I'm trying to decide what would be best for inside the coop. Sand doesn't seem like it would be very cozy for them to sleep on, and definitely not very warm. Which would you do? And what should go in the nesting boxes? They're not laying yet.

Moving them out to the coop

I'm thinking our 3 biggest ones are ready to move out to the coop this weekend. They're 5 week old BOs and they're fully feathered except for their heads (which are getting there). I'm just wondering about the weather. Do I just remove them from their nice cozy brooder and leave them out in the...

Can predators open these types of locks?

Our coop and run doors all have those sliding bolt locks like this http://cdn-viper.demandvideo.com/media/5ec15900-8047-482b-ab0f-dabb8279ed5d/jpeg/b332d039-7119-4560-9a3a-74b3f4442303_2.jpg My 2 year old son has no trouble with them so it got me wondering if raccoons or something could open...

    How do you feed grit?

I'm worried. I haven't been feeding them grit. I didn't know I needed to until today. They've had mealworms and other treats (nothing hard, but they had oatmeal that was mixed in with the mealworms, and shredded cheese, and they've been outside to munch on grass a few times when it hasn't been...

    Traditional feeders/waterers

I'm just wondering why everyone goes to the trouble of making their own. Is there something wrong with the ones you can purchase? They're not THAT expensive so it seems like a lot of trouble to go make your own unless it's gaining you something the other ones don't have. What's the benefit of...

    Our coop is here!!!

We had this built for us because we have no skills or time to build one ourselves, and I wanted something that was going to look decent. I need to spend some time leveling the ground so the run is flush against the coop, that's why it kind of looks cockeyed. I have a few questions about the...

Does the coop need to be level? And question about aprons.

The area we are putting the coop isn't quite level and I don't really have an easy way to level it. Does it matter if it's sitting at a slight angle? It's not going to be a very big angle. If it's not ok, what do you suggest? I was thinking of putting the lower end up on cement blocks but then I...

    Is Beatrix a roo? :(

S/he is by far the most docile of all of our chicks. I can pick her up easily and she is calm. She's very curious about us. However, she's getting a comb MUCH quicker than her siblings and she's the biggest of them all. WDYT? They are just over 4 weeks old. I was told they're all pullets but she...

    Mealworm FRENZY!

I ordered a batch of mealworms that arrived today. This is the first time they've seen mealworms. It was disappointing at first since they were just looking at them and not sure what to make of them. But that didn't last long! Once they got a taste for them, it was CRAZY. They were running all...
