Why Won't My Hen Lay Any Eggs?

Sometimes they start laying later than the website descriptions say. Most of my girls did. FWIW.

Will a single RIR be a bully, or is it a cliquish behavior? Ditto Barred Rocks.

Thank you, I appreciate your experienced perspective. Not to confuse things, but the other thread I currently have going is discussing what to pair with my current birds, and it is more accurate in describing my current flock and immediate questions. I don't currently have Faverolles and am...

    Will these breeds get bullied?

That's what I am wondering. My BCM has feathered legs (I can't recall if my Olive Egger does or not; probably), but not feet, and two or three of the new birds will have feathered feet.

Will a single RIR be a bully, or is it a cliquish behavior? Ditto Barred Rocks.

I understand that there's no guarantee regarding behavior and agree that there are many factors that will both cause and alleviate bullying tendencies. I researched the heck out of breeds to avoid bullying types, and still we get some feather pulling when the provided entertainment isn't up to...

Will a single RIR be a bully, or is it a cliquish behavior? Ditto Barred Rocks.

I heard two chicken podcasters commiserating once that their Barred Rocks were very "cliquish." If I understood them right, it seems they're prone to bullying if there's more than one of them. Something I read recently had me wondering if the same is true with the notoriously bullying RIRs, and...

    Will these breeds get bullied?

Hi everyone! I've got a chick order in, but I'm having second thoughts on breeds, worrying about potential bullying, and wondering if I should change my order to avoid the more timid breeds. I did research all of my current breeds originally, taking care to avoid bullying breeds, but I still...

Will Salmon Faverolles and Brahmas run/evade if bullied?

Thank you, @fluffycrow and @venovee, I feel reassured! I've got them on order for early April. I can't wait!!!

Will Salmon Faverolles and Brahmas run/evade if bullied?

Hi everyone, I've got a small mixed flock in a large coop and run, and carefully chose my breeds to avoid any bullying breeds, but I still get some pecking order shenanigans, the worst being my Welsummer who chases after my Splash Ameraucana and plucks her feathers if she's bored. (She's fine...

1" wide tunnel near run. Is this an ermine/stoat risk?

Thank you! I'll take care of those holes then. Do you think it's enough to shove sticks into the holes on the run end of things as I find them? Or would you take more aggressive action?

Woods Open Air coop folks: help me with a Suskovitch tractor hybrid

Hi everyone! Sorry it's taken me over a year to post an update! Your help was invaluable in building this!! Here is the finished coop...and run! These pics are from last Fall. I'm very happy with it! I went with "plan B" on the coop, as you can see. The upper front and back of the coop are...

1" wide tunnel near run. Is this an ermine/stoat risk?

Hi everyone, There are about five 1"-wide holes near each other, 6 feet from the edge of my run. I don't mind chipmunks or short tailed shrews or whatever is making these, so I don't want to disturb them if I don't have to, unless they pose a danger to my birds. My understanding with...

Will 6 month old hens start laying in winter?

My understanding is that yes, they will. My late-May chicks all started laying late fall or early winter last year, including my BCM whose first egg was Nov. 13. I had one go before that, but most went later. None waited until spring. I got 8 different breeds, most good winter layers, but not all.

    Buff Orpington Random Deaths

I’ve read that Buff Orpington have a tendency towards obesity (they love to eat) and thus a higher risk for prolapse and becoming egg bound. I’m not as familiar with the former, but the latter definitely will result in death, and it’s fast, like 48 hours or something. I think it’s common to...

    Hen or Roo?

I thought I'd follow up to confirm the early maturing pullet determination. YES. She was our first bird to lay! Very early maturing compared to the rest of our flock, which took weeks more to lay. She layed two months ago, and we're still waiting on a couple of our girls.

    Hen or Roo?

It sounds like the consensus is a pullet! YAYYY!!! :celebrate Thank you all! I'm so glad not to have to re-home our "Tufty."... And here's a shot of her well-rounded saddle feathers. They're all asleep in their coop at the moment of course, but I think you can see them pretty well here.

    Hen or Roo?

Hello good folks, I purchased 8 sexed females together, mixed breed birds, and one is a stand-out for "her" enormous comb and wattle. "She" has had a bold personality from the beginning. Sold as a mixed breed F1 or F2 "Olive Egger" from MyPetChicken, s/he looks to have Black Copper Marans and...

Comment by 'Sunshine_Amy' in article 'Caring For Chickens in the Fall'

I see how the wording is misleading, but I’m sure the intention is to spray down the cleaned out coop, not the bedding! Old bedding is simply removed. Coop thoroughly cleaned and sprayed and dried on a hot autumn day, then fresh dry bedding added.

Did I miss the boat for winter laying? 13-14 week old hens, in MA

Oh wow, that’s impressive! And reassuring! Thanks!
