Chicken Died, Marek’s Disease Suspected. Rest of flock probably exposed. What do I do? What can I do?

I am aware of what freezing does that makes a necropsy difficult, but I think it’s too late. I’m 600mi from home and I had to think quick to give our caregiver instructions. I watched the chicken die on the nanny cam I had in her iso cage while our caregiver was trying to get her to take water...

Chicken Died, Marek’s Disease Suspected. Rest of flock probably exposed. What do I do? What can I do?

Not sure a necropsy is an option. We’re are out of town on a trip we’d planned for a while. Our friend who’s been looking after the flock and also checking on her until we got back, was with her and we were talking of FaceTime when the chicken appeared to have a seizure and died. We’re not...

Chicken Died, Marek’s Disease Suspected. Rest of flock probably exposed. What do I do? What can I do?

I had a chicken die today, and we are suspecting Marek’s. She’s been limping for a couple weeks. Thought it was an injury. Took to avian vet, just gave us Meloxicam. Chicken when down hill over weekend. Isolated her to a her own cage, but not sure if we isolated her soon enough to have prevented...

    Chicken With Injured Leg

We’re going to the same vet as Wednesday. She is laying eggs. No bloating I’ve not the vet has noticed. I did snap a pic while she was sleeping to show how she was laying, with the lame leg sticking out rather than laying on her hocks. If I were to listen to my gut, I’d say she’s sore and tired...

    Chicken With Injured Leg

So, we’re still trying to figure out what is going on with this leg. Went to an avian vet on Wednesday. She couldn’t identify any obvious injury. The hen was eating and drinking well during the visit. Was given Meloxicam to give her. But this morning I went to open the coop, and she was laying...

    Chicken With Injured Leg

I have a 7mo Sapphire Splash hen that’s been limping for about a week. She doesn’t seem able to put weight on her “heel”, the part of the foot next to the back toe. I don’t see an obvious injury. Skin intact, no swelling. She seems healthy otherwise. I thought at first she may be having a...

    Calcium deficiency, guidance and recommendations

T Thank you for the suggestion. My research has said that calcium depletion can cause leg problems as that’s where calcium is pulled from once they exhaust what they get from their diet. I’m just concerned because it seems like she’s very uncomfortable, and I want to help her quickly.

    Calcium deficiency, guidance and recommendations

She’s just at 6 mo and has been laying eggs since mid Feb. I’ve checked her feet everyday since I noticed the limping and I don’t see anything obvious. No broken or discolored skin. No swelling that I can tell. She is a little lethargic. As I’ve already said, I’m new to chicken raising, which is...

Calcium deficiency, making sure recommended care I got makes sense.

Also, is there a certain dose I should use? I’m seeing options like 650mg and 1000mg. Don’t want to give her too much and make things worse.

Calcium deficiency, making sure recommended care I got makes sense.

I will try that. She’s also limping around too. I’ve read that the legs are the first place calcium gets drawn when they are deficient. The shelless egg happened after the limping started. Someone has been laying really large eggs, and I suspect it’s her. My understanding that it takes time for...

Calcium deficiency, making sure recommended care I got makes sense.

Thank you!! I felt it kinda odd at first to give an injectable orally, but I’m glad to hear I can. But I had mixed it in her water. I can give it her directly as well. I have a syringe I can use.

Calcium deficiency, making sure recommended care I got makes sense.

We’re using the Purina feed with the oyster shell mix. But maybe this hen is still not getting enough calcium from it. The thing I’m worried about with the recommendations I’ve gotten so far is about giving her calcium gluconate injectable as an oral. I was told it was ok, but I’m starting to...

Calcium deficiency, making sure recommended care I got makes sense.

I pretty new at backyard chckening, and I have a hen that’s been limping for the past couple days, and laid a shelless egg yesterday. I’ve got her inside with her own food with plenty of oyster shells. I talked to folks at the local farm supply store, and they suggested I add calcium gluconate...

Need help improving our predator defenses!

We are down to 9 chickens. We lost one to a red shouldered hawk a week ago Sunday. Very heartbreaking. We were all getting particularly attached to her. She had a strong personality. I don’t know if hens are known for doing this, but with how fearless she seemed to be, I just wonder if she might...

Need help improving our predator defenses!

Thank you for all the suggestions. I am leaning toward creating a smaller area with wire fencing and netting. My wife wants to use the entire space inside the privacy fence. I am not sure we can secure that much space. I can string wire everywhere, tie up pie pans for noise and something...

Need help improving our predator defenses!

We are 4 months into our effort to raise chickens. So far it’s been working pretty well, until today. We have a nice sized coop that sits at the far end of a fenced in area that is about 4000 sq ft in total (the area, not the coop). We put up a wooden privacy fence in December for them to have...
