Wyandotte swollen abdomen, Ascites or Perontitis? Pics included.

I've read threads, consulted my Chicken Health book and consulted and Dr. Google. and I can't pin down Lacey the Silver Laced Wyandotte's abdominal issues. She's eating and drinking. I free feed Tucker Milling's non-GMO 16.5% protein feed, maybe a 1/4 cup mealworms scattered to nine 10 month old...

Is this bumblefoot? Does hemp bedding cause it?

My girl Dot may be developing bumblefoot, I would like to catch it early. Any help would be appreciated. As an aside, I'd like opinions on hemp bedding. Pic attached. I like the minimal dust and the absorbancy, but question the form and whether it may damage their feet when dismounting from the...

Crop feels like a water balloon

Hi! Not an emergency, or I don't think so. I have a 9-month-old Jubilee Orpington that weighs 10 lbs. Last night and tonight her crop was swinging under her chest like a water balloon. I felt it. It is not hard or lumpy but feels just like... a water balloon. She's not lethargic, she eats, she...

    Anyone use Southland Organics supplements?

Has anyone used Southland Organics products before? I ordered the Backyard Chicken Bundle of chicken supplements: Hen Helper (poultry probiotic), Motherload (ACV with garlic) & Catalyst (poultry vitamins) from Southland Organics. I did so because it claims to help chickens in a variety of ways...

How scared is too scared? 11w/o Swedish Flower chick

I picked up an 11 week old Swedish Flower chick tonight. Her name is Penny Lane. Seems she would rather eat through hardware cloth or the wooden coop walls to escape me than let me walk within 10 feet of the coop. I'm truly concerned she's going to hurt herself. I feed in the run, not the coop...

Lethargic, listing, slimy mouth please help Dot

My normally exuberant pullet Dot is sick. I followed the questionnaire in the thread header. 1) Born June 24, Lisa Steele's Cookies & Cream, unknown mix. Feathered feet, 5 toes, mohawk 2) Lethargy, listing, slime in mouth, almost a hiccup. Trembling. Laying flat. Crop not full, butt clean. She...

    Pulled feather - quill question

So I found this today, it's off my 11 week old Blue Orpington. This feather doesn't look like what I've been finding scattered about. The quill has a fat sheath; it looks like a tiny carrot. I have found no blood anywhere. Should I be concerned? Thanks for your info!

8 week old Fibro EE: Hen or rooster

Pepper is and 8 week old Fibro Easter Eggger. She's (🤞) sort of crowing. Kind of a gurgled er-eh-er-er-er. Pepper's a bigger bird than the rest of the 9o'Flock and they're all hatched June 24th, 2024 at Meyer Hatchery. Hen or rooster? 😬 Beautiful regardless. Enjoy the pics!

    Bunched-up roosting

The 6-weeks old 9 o'Flock have a 60" perch to roost on at night. Why do they all bunch up? Is it because of the skylight? Eventually they'll have to spread out, right? I've tried to space them apart but they move back together like a recoiling spring. It's fairly hot at night still, worries me...

How do I secure this kennel/run door?

A couple more steps to a secure run, but this has me stumped. Door only opens out, and the latch has to be accessible from inside so I don't get trapped. I don't want it to look all patched together like a 12 year old did it - which would be what happens is I come up with something myself. Any...

Day-old chicks start inside or outside?

My chicks are hatching (at Meyer) June 24 and hitting the postal road to me in Atlanta, GA. I've suddenly gone bimbo, forgot what I've read, what you've all written... letting the sound of my own wheels make me crazy! I digress. My brooder *aka "the nursery" is inside the house in a ground floor...

Any problems with chicks via USPS in Southeast?

Chicks via the US Postal Service topic is widely covered, but I am wondering if anyone in Georgia (Southeast in general even) ordering chicks from afar are having trouble receiving live birds? 3 recent negative reviews of Meyer Hatchery from Tennessee claim dead and dying chicks, each claiming 3...

    My coop project.

Much like there's no such thing as a free puppy, it's the same for a chicken coop. I am mighty grateful to have it though for sure. These folks lost their hens to predators so they finally gave up on keeping them after 10 years. Broken hearted, they just abandoned it as it was when the last...

    Pavestone Paver Base

I was given a coop, a dog lot run and a couple of bags of Pavestone Paver Base to use in the run on top of the earth floor. I'm not so sure about the paver base. There's a lot of sand (of course) and it comes with a handy "contains silica" warning. Also there are rock chips (of course.) I was...

Hello! I'm here for the hen party!

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am a pet sitter and I have cared for other's hens/roos for over 20 years. I want to have my own now. Well on my way! Need food, disease, care tips! (2) How many chickens do you have right now? First shipment coming 06/24/2024. I am...
