Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

We have been lucky with our 2 Australorps as they started laying both in the same week and I have regularly gone in to the coop to check for eggs and found 1 of the girls in there (Kit and Kat). Now we also have a BLRW the same age who has showed no signs of laying - no squatting, no redness in...

Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

I have been following your thread for a while and when we got our first eggs from our australorps at 18 weeks I didn't want to share our good news as you were still waiting and then were told it could be 24 weeks or more - wow we were lucky with ours. But woke up this am to read your exciting...

"rescued' yet another one... (graphic pictures)

Just stumbled across this thread this am and read it all. It was so wonderful to watch her thrive in the loving care you gave her and as everyone else has said, she had the best 9 months because of you and your love and care for her. I am crying now for your loss and my heart goes out to you but...

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

TSC is Tractor Supply - we go to ones in Brentwood, Plaistow and Derry NH but am not sure where there are any in MA. There is Essex CoOp in Topsfield for chicks and also depending on where you live Dodge Grain in Salem, NH gets regular shipments and you can check their webpage for what they may...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I have friends who have had success with the lavendar repelling mice but when we tried it, it did nothing - the little buggers just ignored it. We have been trying every method lately (lavendar, steel wool, mouse traps, etc) and we can still hear them in the attic - very frustrating :(

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

If you are going to start chicks on the FF with chick starter do you still put BOSS in it or should you wait until they are older for it? I just read the last post and saw that you are adding it to the layer pellets but I am assuming I would wait to give it to chicks.

    are chickens pets?

Definitely beloved pets in our household with all of them having names, special likes and dislikes, cuddle time with their humans, play time with the dogs and they even give us great tasting, fresh eggs in all different colors- what else could be better?!

Help for a bunch of soured cream

Does anyone out there have any good recipes for something to do with 10 quarts of cream that has soured? I think I can make sour cream out of it but not sure how and not sure if you have any other ideas as I don't want it to go to waste. Thanks in advance!

    Hawks :(

The same thing just happened to us. I heard awful screeching from the coop/run and when I looked outside a hawk had hold of one of my silkies through the chicken wire and was attempting to feed on her right there. I sent the german shepherd out the door ahead of me and went running to the...
