    How to Stop a Bobcat

Every night something eats one of my chickens. I'm thinking its a bobcat because my husband seen one in our yard a couple of times. My chickens are in a pen with a six foot high fence that's connected to a barn. I don't know how to stop whatever is eating them. Any ideas?

    Can't Keep My Silkie's Safe

I have been trying to keep some silkies in a barn I have. But something always comes in an kills my hens. It leaves the rooster alone....(the coward isn't doing a very good job protecting his hens)....but it always kills my beautiful hens. What can I do? Do you think a big duck or goose will help?

    Amazing Silkie

I've heard that silkies aren't supposed to be very good layers. I got silkies cuz I thought they were cute, not cuz I wanted eggs from them. I have one cute black silkie hen, and a white silkie rooster. (My other hen got killed). She started laying eggs a few weeks ago; and she has done...

    Want Call Duck Info

I have a great fascination for the adorable call ducks. I was wondering if anyone has any information/pictures of them. I read somewhere that they are easily tamed, but that they are hard to raise/breed.

    How Much to Feed

I was wondering how much I should feed my chickens. In one pen I have 11 Australorps, 2 barred rocks, and 1 dominique. They never seem to get full. The australorps are still growing, are quite active, and very lean. I want to fatten them up but don't know how. They never seem full! Right now I'm...

When to take Chicks off of Chick Starter

I've been wondering when I should take my chicks off of chick starter. And once I take them off, what should I buy for them? Chicken scratch? (They are already eating scraps all the time along with their chick starter. I think they're about 8 to 9 weeks old right now.)

    Silkie Gender

Here's my two white silkie beauties. I was wondering if anyone can tell if they are roosters or hens. I'm thinking at least one of them is a hen. Here's the two together: Here's the chick that's farther to the right in the above picture: (I'm thinking this is a roo) Here's the other one.

Young Australorp Chicks -- Roosters or Hens?

I got twelve young Australorps. Today I moved them out into the coop...(they were getting too big for the cage). As soon as I moved them out, some of them started cock fighting. (Kind of shocking for such young birds). I'm not sure which ones are roosters. Australorps are all solid black, and...

    Chick Isn't Eating

I posted this somewhere else, but no one has answered it yet: I just recently got 15 little australorp chicks. When I got them, one of them had spraddle leg. I fixed it and she can walk fine now, but I don't think she's eating. I went feed the chicks today, and all the rest of the chicks were...

Chick Isn't Eating - What to do?

I just recently got 15 little australorp chicks. When I got them, one of them had spraddle leg. I fixed it and she can walk fine now, but I don't think she's eating. I went feed the chicks today, and all the rest of the chicks were excited and running around and eating like happy little chicks...

My Baby Chicks are Finallly Here

I just brought home 15 Australorp chicks! They are so cute! I'm a little worried about one of them. I didn't notice it when I got her, but she seems to be having trouble standing up. Her legs always goes wide apart and she is always doing a split. You can see her doing it here: Here she...

    What to do with Roosters

I'm getting new chicks this Friday from a local breeder--so they'll be straight run. I'm a little nervous about what I will do if I get a bunch of roosters. It'd seem like it'd be hard to re-home them, because most people just want hens. I know some people cook them, but I'm too queasy to...

    Put These Two Breeds Together?

Anyone ever put Buff Orpingtons and Silkies together in the same pen? I was wondering how it'll work. I'm looking into getting new chicks, and I'm in love with both these breeds. Currently I have one Dominique hen and 2 barred rock hens. If these three hens won't get along with the new ones I'll...

    The Best Layer

I'm looking for the greatest egg layer I can get, so long as that quality is combined with a sweet temper and great mothers. I've been researching all sorts of chickens, and get mixed opinions. Currently I have 2 barred rock hens and 1 dominique. I had started with 6 dominiques but some stuff...

What Happens When You Mix Breeds?

Right now I have some Barred Rock Hens--only three of them. My rooster and the rest of my hens died of some disease that some new hens brought in. Instead of getting more Barred Rocks I decided I would get some Salmon Faverolles. I only have one pen. Do you think I'll have to get rid of my...

    Anyone Ordered from a Hatchery?

Has anyone ever ordered from a hatchery online? How'd that go? I was thinking of ordering some Salmon Faverolle's from a hatchery if I can't find any locally.

    Chicken Gurgling And Weak

I'm in a dilemma. I'm not sure what's going on with my chickens. I have Dominiques. For the past week or so I've noticed they haven't been eating very much. It's been worrying me. Today I went in there and noticed that one of my hens is too weak to do much. She's all fluffed up and sitting down...

    What Did I Do Wrong

I've been reading the posts on BackYardChicken for some time now, trying to get help and increase my knowledge on chickens. I finally decided to join cuz I realize I have many questions to ask. I just traded in my three Mallard ducks for 6 Dominique chicks. Years ago we hatched eleven...
