if the rooster is silver grey, the pullets will be silver the cockerels will be golden. BUT if the hen was buff she throws a whole other realm of possibilities, because of the wheaten and dilute factors involved with buff. if she wasn't pure, then who knows. anything's possible, but...
@Purple Iris usually my own chicks by 4-5 weeks have most of their body and head feathers coming in, the breast is coloring as well. I would say that chick is maybe 2-3 weeks old? best guess.
isn't that the truth! they are slow growing for one, so culling early is not a good thing. if someone's culling early, you probably don't want what they're selling! the only thing I cull for that early tho are foot issues, and this year I'm ignoring feet, hoping to get more size. feet can be...
the problem is that there's not enough people breeding them seriously enough IMO. over the last 3 years I've managed to increase my overall weights but they're not to standard yet.
where do they determine what? the Standard of Perfection? that was established when the breed was accepted by the APA. for silver greys, that was back in the 1800s I think? reds it was around 1975. they used the existing size standard but added the color variety. my years may be off, but...
"show quality" is likely going to be an even harder find, but you can find breeders working towards that goal. I've been at it for a number of years now, and while I like the type I'm getting, they're still not up to SOP weights.
welcome to 'Dorkingdom!' I haven't had australorps so can't offer any comparisons. I DO have a variety of breeds tho, but my main focus is silver grey Dorkings. I have a small group of reds and coloreds, blue laced red Wyandottes and Swedish flower hens, plus some bantam cochins who are...
from Germany, you may be able to get eggs/chicks out of the uk much easier... I know there are some good breeders there. might be worth looking into. a few of them are on the FB page - Dorking Club USA
well, a successful hatching season is finally under way, better late than never! my rooster was on winter vacation apparently, until about 3 weeks ago! I've got about 20 chicks hatched so far, with more in the incubator due over the next couple weeks, and more going in as I get them.
I'm...
dark grey is not a recognized variety by APA, but I'd like to see pictures of your birds and also know the weights on your adults?
are you breeding the colors separately or all in one pen? white can be recessive so it depends which pen the eggs came from to identify which line carries the strain.
honestly, it's kind of the wrong season to get more than chicks right now... like many others, I've thinned my over winter load, now I'm just waiting for eggs to start hatching.
