From silkie mix to new breed?

The time has finally come to try hatching some chicks! I have 9 eggs in the incubator from this project. One egg is Zombie's and another is from a frizzle cochin, so hopefully there will be some pretty chicks. I made a hatch-a-long thread if anyone's interested in joining. This year the naming...

From silkie mix to new breed?

Not an update, just seeing speckled eggs in the nests again recently made me excited about hatching chicks for this project in spring. There was another one with lighter speckles last week.

And while I'm here, might as well share a newer picture of Onyx.

From silkie mix to new breed?

I took some time to rework what I wanted them to look like, since I didn't quite like the previous sketch I drew. I knew I wanted them to resemble bantam cochins a little more, but not be exactly like them. So this is what I came up with: More upright posture than cochins, slightly longer...

The pullets are starting to lay now. I've seen a few little speckled eggs. It's nice to see that being passed on from their grandmother. I haven't quite figured out who's been laying the speckled eggs, but today I found a clue that lead me to believe it was Onell. Hopefully I can get some...

I will definitely keep the walnut combs. I've had chickens with different comb types and walnuts have always been my favorite.

I took some photos of the two roosters and Onell. Unfortunately I only have the pictures of Onyx at the moment. The rest I'll post later. He's such a pretty rooster. I love how feathered his legs are. There's more feathers than there is leg. I also like that he doesn't have those blue earlobes...

Here's what I've learned recently: (If I'm wrong on any of this feel free to correct me. I'm trying to write it all down to understand it a bit better cause it's a bit of a mess in my head right now.) This color is a result of them having one Ml (melanotic) gene. If I had two birds of the...

From silkie mix to new breed?

For a while now I've been trying to think of a name for them. I want it to be one word, simple, translates well in other other languages (specifically English and Latvian) and has some kind of meaning that links it back to it's Latvian origin. With that in mind the name for this breed that I...

The boys are starting to look and act like roosters now. I thought I'd post a little update of what they look like now (Onyx and Onell). I've decided I will keep all pullets over the winter, just cause I'm not in a rush to get rid of them and I'm interested to see how they'll look when they're...

From silkie mix to new breed?

I tried to make a sketch of what it may look like, but I think it turned out looking a bit too much like a brahma. Though I guess these would have a more slim, slender chest area. Any ideas on what may help make them look a bit more different from brahmas? Although I suppose when you add all the...

Are you asking if I've had chicks with silked feathers hatch from this cross in later generations? If so, yes, I have. 2 have hatched silked so far. They had a 50% chance of being silked, but out of 11 chicks I only got 2 silked.

Ah, okay then. I will still try to get the tails to have a more square shape, even if they'll have the longer feathers in roosters.

Alright. I think I'll start working on their body type, tail and all those things once the color breeds true.

I've got an idea on what to do about tails. I really like the square shape of the tails of Onyx and Orion. I also really love the little round bump of feathers Oakley has at the start of the tail. Onyx with his square tail. It will likely get long feathers in it when he's older, but I would...

A little update: The 2 month olds have gotten sick with coccidiosis. I've been treating them for it. I've sadly lost three. Olive and two of the white pullets (yellow and green rings). Good news is that no more are badly sick. A couple others were looking off a couple days back, but they're...

Orion started crowing. I also noticed he's starting to get saddle feathers. Ollie is a pretty little pullet. Onell looks a lot like Oakley. I think I'm going to keep Onell. Even if I don't end up breeding her it's good to have a backup just in case. About beards All these chicks should have 1...

I didn't really have the time or patience to take pictures of everyone today, but I managed to take photos of Onyx and Orion. They're so pretty. I think they're around 7 weeks old now. Onyx: Orion:
