Ah, Cuprous (the name we gave it). Unsure what sex is (or breed as they are all backyard mutts, but definitely thinking theres some EE in the mix). Loving the color, the last few days it's started getting a little mohawk hairstyle so realy wondering whats in there (best guess... EE hen under...
Not sure which one you are mentioning but if the red band one sadly I'm getting the impression it's a boy. Tomorrow I'll be taking all their pictures for the grow along thread as it will be their 4 week b day.
Mine turn 4 weeks tomorrow...
Had them outside for a little bit today, coop almost finished... Definitely look (and sound) little mini chickens... Then the question is to incubate more??
Chicken math must be a real thing... Since now thinking that we only have 4 hens my wife want to get some day old chicks that came in locally... How old of an age separation is ok in a brooder? Our chicks are 2 weeks old tomorrow, would the bully younger chicks?
At what age do roos start showing behaviors of being a roo? My five toed chick on several occasions had been going around chest puffed up and head high towards other chicks.
I do have a picture of all the eggs before they were set, and numbered them. The eggs were separated in groups of 2 with cardboard dividers so I know exactly which chick came from what egg. The chicks ended up being larger than I anticipated though and one managed to jump the divider, but I was...
Okay, spoke with guy I got my eggs from and he does in fact have 1 Cemani hen and roo, so I got lucky on that one. Heres the whole list of what he has (free range) so should make for some interesting detective work..
Hens:
Ayam cemani (ivory egg)
Light brahma (light tan egg)
Easter egger...
We never had chicks/chickens before so I never saw regular chickens in detail before. Technically we aren't supposed to have them as our property isn't big enough (if we had an extra 1/2 acre though we would be able to have 100 birds). Several of our neighbors have them, no one actually cares...
What is interesting is the two chicks that came from the white eggs he told me were leghorns..... look NOTHING alike, one was the solo yellow chick, and the other is the chick with the pink band on the chicks right leg (so the chick with the black face, not the copper face).
I have to get the...
I took them all out of the brooder for a few minutes while I changed out the bedding (tomorrow I'm switching to the wood shaving though). Made it easy to take their pics as I was putting them back 1 at a time.
I was wondering myself about the Cemani possibility. I'll have to ask if he has...
When I asked my co-worker original when getting the eggs he just blanket stated "Easter Eggers". Talking to him a little more sounds like he might have had a Leghorn under a Marans roo, and when I said about the fluffy footed one he said might be his Polish.
Ultimately I kind of like the idea...
1/4 inch orthodontic bands. I'm sure in a week or two I'll have to replace with small zip ties. If they don't all look distinctly different by then that is.
Took some individual pics. Going to try , and follow how each one grows/changes, especially since I don't know what breeds they are/come from (mostly mixes I believe).
This one's got fuzzy legs and 5 toes.
And finally, Zombie.
My hatch is officially over. Set 12 eggs, pulled a clear on day 5 or 6, the other 11 made it to lockdown. 9 hatched, checked the other 2 this morning but sadly they were gone. Still 9 is far higher than I initially expected.
::Insert obligatory cuteness::
These two will finish drying off in the incubator for the night. And right after my last post the other egg pipped, and half hour later it's almost done zipping out.
Day 21 officially ended, 8 hatched total so far, 1 egg still wiggling/chirping. 2 more eggs unsure of. For a first time though I feel like that's a pretty good success rate.
