    March 2023 hatch-a-long

They were weak. Even after a day they didn't seem to eat... they looked skinny and had a hard time walking. Only seeking the warmth of the heating plate. If I would keep chickens just to have chickens, I might have given them a chance. But as a breeder it makes no sense to keep these chicks...

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

My last hatch ended up being 26 healthy chicks. Even though I always preach not to help, I helped. I am sooo bad at this. But like always it was a mistake and I culled the 3 I helped. That makes 59 Sulmtaler chicks for this breeding season. It will have to do for this year. I also have 19...

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

My chicks are hatching as I'm writing this. A bunch have hatched already. I can't see enough to count. That is the bad side of this incubator. But for that it does a fantastic job. The booted bantams that I am hatching for a friend seem to hatch well as well. But they are soooo tiny...

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

Last hatch for March and also this year went into lockdown. I had to take out 3 more eggs and so I am left with 41 Sulmtaler eggs. I am also hatching a bunch of black booted bantams for a friend. I didn't even count the eggs... but there are plenty. LOL Even thought I did not manage to...

My chicks from the 2nd March hatch had their Marek shot yesterday. All are doing well. One Sulmtaler chick kinda looked tired last night and I thought oh oh... it's not going to make it. But I guess it was just that.... tired from the day's events. It was just fine this morning and I can't...

My second hatch is over. 19 Sulmtaler and 25 Augsburger. 3 Sulmtaler and 4 Augsburger didn't make the hatch. All in all pretty good. They are all doing great! And just so cute. The black ones are Augsburger and the yellow fluffies are Sulmtaler.

Oh... and my 3rd hatch for March is looking better than the first two... there are more eggs fertile. I don't have the exact numbers yet but fertility is improved.

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

My 2nd hatch went into lockdown last night. 22 Sulmtaler eggs and 29 Augsburger. As I know the parentage of each Augsburger egg, I have them seperated and hatching with my Sulmtaler (they look different)... I have never had so many seperated compartments as this time. I got special chick...

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

I set 68 Sulmtaler eggs last night. I realized that they will hatch in March as well. Immunization will be April 1st... so I always thought it will be an April hatch. This coming Monday will be lockdown for my second March hatch. Augsburger and Sulmtaler. And next week my first hatch of 14...

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

I had all 15 chicks hatch. One was weak and didn't want to eat or drink. I had to cull it this morning. They all had their Marek's and Cocci immunizations and are doing well. I did post pictures, yesterday I believe.

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

Unfortunately I had to cull a chick this morning. He looked pretty thin when I took him out of the incubator. And he didn't want to eat or drink. I even tried forcing some egg into his beak... nothing. This morning he just wanted to sleep under the heating plate. So I decited his fate for...

It differs. You can have early quitters which tend to show a blood ring. And you can have late quitters.. all the way to not being strong enough to make it out of the egg.

    March 2023 hatch-a-long

I took 14 chicks out this morning. One is still trying to hatch. I just couldn't tell if all had hatched or not. That is the only bad thing about this incubator. You can't see what is happening in the back. But 14 out of 15 chicks is not bad. And who knows, maybe the last one will make it...

I assume you would candle in your home where temps are not too chilli. So you do not need to worry about that. A broody hen does get up too usually once a day to eat, drink and poop.

Actually this is my first March hatch... those are my own eggs. The next hatch in about 2 weeks will have the shipped eggs. This year my chickens have an issue with fertility. Not very happy at all. But the shipped eggs are doing great! This is a Heka incubator. It is made here in Germany...
