Avian influenza found in South Carolina

I like cormorants myself. I spent a semester at Duke's marine lab in Beaufort, NC and loved to watch the cormorants holding their wings out in the wind to dry.

Thank you. That's a ways away, but I've had my flock under lockdown for over a month. :(

Mine want badly to get out into the run, but the 19 of them have 256 square feet of coop/run combo to enjoy. They're just spoiled.

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

I'm assuming it was some kind of serious backyard breeder or a homesteader selling eggs and/or raising meat birds of various types. I had 47 chickens this summer without even really trying.

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Indeed. People don't go into animal agriculture if they don't love animals. They're not out there trying to get a sick thrill from torture, they're trying to do a horrible job the best way they can in order to prevent a bad situation from getting worse. :(

I've got a pack of juveniles in the flock right now and they need some additional elbow room.

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Because it's been a month since a case was reported in NC and since summer heat has arrived, I decided to set up the fence and let the birds out this evening. The two roosters led all the senior birds outside while the youngsters stayed in the coop.

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Probably because there's no way to predict it.
  14. 3KillerBs

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

That's really sad. I hope that they can, in due time, rebuild.
  15. 3KillerBs

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Really? I didn't hear that. I'm sad because they have such lovely facilities.
  16. 3KillerBs

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

I'm actually keeping an eye on what the zoo is doing since they're not too far away. If they've got their birds locked up then I probably should.
  17. 3KillerBs

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

    Until further notice, I presume.
  18. 3KillerBs

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Sensible. IMO, it would be bad too be too dogmatic about the situation in either direction. :)
