Sad ending for the OEGB eggs. Two didn't hatch (I blame my bad incubator), and the one that did I culled today. Two club feet. It was also very weak, and had trouble hatching, so I think this was for the best. :(
I have a problem. One of the OEGB eggs hatched. The other two don't look like they will. So, I have a lone chick.
The chicks that are with a momma right now are a week old. Plus, they're standard size. Do I take a chance sneaking in this diminutive fluffball at night, or steal one of her...
Mopsy finally decided to get off the remaining eggs. Unfortunately, one had pipped and was peeping. The three remaining eggs were brought inside to the incubator, and the pipped one hatched. It was dry enough (and LOUD enough!) that I decided to bring it out to Mom at around 10 pm last night...
Here's a bad pic of the latest bebes. There are six in total (one egg that she's still on is pipped and peeping, so we'll see), the chick missing in the pic is another light blue that prefers to hide out under Momma.
Ugh, too many threads where I'm talking about eggs and babies, I forgot to mention things here where I'm supposed to!!! :th
Out of the five foster eggs, three survived. One I found dead under the hen, the other dead and half-zipped.
Now with her own eggs, they started hatching today! She's...
This is where the broody hen was nesting. Under those cedars.
She was a very good girl and didn't struggle when I took the eggs and then her, putting them all in a straw-lined bucket.
And here she is in a rabbit cage. I placed her in and then her eggs, and she went and plopped right back...
The cracked egg was no good. Maybe that's why it had been tossed out of the nest?
Also had some of the iffy eggs from the poor hen that was killed go bad. Down to five of hers, I think. Thereabouts, anyhow.
FOUND HER!!!
Found the broody that is hiding her eggs. Along the rock-face bordering the property and the road, under a cedar tree. :barnie
She'd managed to knock some of the eggs out of the nest, too. :he Amazingly, only one was cracked. After maneuvering myself along the rock, I...
I'm an impatient person. Three eggs look like either quitters or clear (most probably quitters) but I'll leave them in for the time being. That's still 8 eggs that are at the same point.
Perhaps when it's darker, I'll check again and with a stronger flashlight. Couldn't see much when I...
Went to give my broody in the daylilies some food this morning, only to find her gone, feathers everywhere, and eggs cold. One cracked.
I'd been afraid of moving her since I didn't want to have to do indoor (ie incubator) hatching, but looks like that's what I'm doing after all. Sigh. :(
11...
Right now, temps are hovering around 20 C, or a bit higher, during the day, going to low teens at night. I'm sure they'll be fine. Mom has a lot of down. :)
I'll probably modify some rabbit cages, or make a small run with a covered area with the hardware cloth. Something I can move around on the grass too, so they can do some foraging.
I'm mostly worried about the time of year, as nights are getting chili, and even days are cooling down. Why the...
Looks like the eggs under the broody are coming along nicely. I estimate babies (if all goes right) in less than two weeks. I'm going to need to set something up for them since they'll be outdoor babies.
