Congratulations Ini Mini!!! What a wise old bird she must be - and she has kept her girlish figure! Seriously, congratulations to you both. Ten years is quite an achievement. 🥰

Love the warning sounds! I assume your issue with my categories is only with comrade because it implies parity and you find it hard to believe in parity when one side of the relationship has the power to end the life of the other. Have I got that right? If I have understood you right, then I...

I struggled with that one because they are primarily for use (i.e.. livestock) but I believe strong emotional bonds are formed such that many get adopted even after they age out of their ability to serve. I know this is true for police dogs and rescue dogs which were the example I had in mind...

An apology worries me more than heavy handedness. Hope you are doing OK and today is better.

To me that does not need specifying because it goes with the concept of keeping. We have that responsibility for pets, comrades, and livestock. But I realized I did not clarify that comrades are ‘kept’ (a distinction from Ambassadors) so I have edited the Comrade definition to hopefully make it...

I will give it a go, but I think the question misses the point I was trying (apparently unsuccessfully) to make. My point is that 'livestock or pet' is a false dichotomy. Having just two categories to describe the full complexity of our relationships with other species is inadequate. In human...

I agree. I find this a very simplistic approach to something more complex. I don’t believe ‘consumption’ can be the singular distinction between a pet and livestock. A hen that never lays and is never eaten is a pet regardless whether she has a name, is feral, or part of a barnyard or back yard...

Can you remind us how to do the corrugated paper rolls? I have spent all winter stockpiling corrugated paper and now is the time to use it - but I forgot how and can’t find where you first posted about it! Thanks in advance.

You can get motion activated compressed air canisters that are quite effective at deterring cats. You would need to look with a camera or something to figure where exactly he comes from so you put them in the correct spot.

This is a very good way of putting it. @BDutch we are all giving you big hugs. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Yes cats are messy hunters. That is partly why my money is on a fox

That you haven’t found any feathers or body parts makes me think more of a fox. They take the bird with them and sometimes bury it to eat later. Foxes are everywhere even if you don’t see them and they are very smart. Also they are opportunistic hunters so if there is easier food they will...

Is this where I show off and say an Australian slug will never say no to a free tinnie?! :lau Did I use it correctly?

I am now curious why that is. Slugs are more convenient as they are already off the shell. Strange.

Yes that. They will mainly be dead when you empty the trap. We put them on the compost heap. If the chickens like beer-soaked slugs I doubt that small amount of beer would harm a chicken if it found one in the compost.

Yup. What you describe is a beer trap and they catch a lot of slugs. I like naked snail, but I prefer having a separate word because somehow I find snails are quite cute and friendly and slugs are just nasty! If I get around to trying it I will report back on boiling the slugs and if the...

My mother had a lot of success with the beer traps. Aided of course by her little slug slaughterer daughter!
