The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

If it helps, Fluffy, I think the same of myself literally all the time. In fact, half the time when I haven't posted in threads I've followed or have posted in before for a long time, it's because I'm sitting here thinking I'll just annoy people if I do so I'll stay quiet. I've been told by...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Oooh, neat! :D I'll have to look her up! That was before my Eurovision time, but of course, as a silly U.S. American, I was only really introduced to the contest just last year. 🤭

Go, Foureira, go!! :jumpy :fl :jumpy Out of curiosity, and I apologize if this has been mentioned and I just missed it, but does her name have any kind of special meaning? It may just be the name nerd in me showing, but I find it to be such an interesting name! :love

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

So, when people say that hens are born with as many eggs as they will ever have, that's not entirely accurate. They are actually, effectively, born with the building blocks to produce only a certain number of eggs. It's a bit complicated and you'll have to forgive me if I'm missing details as...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

An interesting topic indeed! :D First off, unlike in mammals and other XY chromosomal system species, the sex of a chick is actually determined long before conception. In XY-chromosome species, it's conception that determines the offspring's sex because it's the male that determines the sex of...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Oh wow, 8 weeks seemed about average just from my experience! I'm actually surprised at how late y'all are having them crow! Must be a breed difference? I've had Cochins, Easter-eggers (bantam and large fowl), Dorkings, Old English Game bantams, Marans, Silkies, Barred Rock bantams...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

I'd seen where some with super early crowers theorized that as well, but I'm not so sure. 🤔 The meanest cockerels I ever had (the Marans I mentioned before) started crowing at a pretty normal age, I believe 8 weeks or so but I'd have to check through my thread and see if I said anywhere there to...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

They were the cutest for sure, but they also turned into the biggest buttheads as I recall :tongue Well, maybe not the biggest buttheads, that definitely goes to the group of Marans cockerels I had that would immediately go into attack mode as soon as I set foot in their pen. :th But those...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

They were home hatched from Roscoe and Donna, so no feed store mix-ups or anything, and both times were the only chicks in the house at the time. 🙂 I never caught their very first crows on camera, but here was one at 6 days old crowing:

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

My youngest crowers were my silkied Red Cochin bantam boys that would first announce their manhood at 3 or 4 days old. Yes, days. :th

To be honest, I've heard they were going to do something like that (U.S. Eurovision, that is), but I've never seen or heard any more of it 🤔 The music that tends to be most popular here is definitely not my taste, so I'm afraid it would be pretty disappointing for me to watch. :hmm Big same...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Unfortunately, they block most of their youtube channel for U.S. viewers. :hmm I just downloaded a free VPN and set it to Europe so I could watch the full show anyway 😀 Yeah, to me a lot of the performances last night were pretty meh songs with boring staging. I remember thinking that most of...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Shoot, I forgot about Eurovision, too! It's weird, all April I was keeping track of how it was building up, and then May hit and it completely left my brain. 😵‍💫

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Oh my heart, that precious little tiny in the mix :love I know you have said you don't know exactly which chick is which outside a select few, but do you have any guesses or estimations? Just curious  I love the variety of chipmunky colors on those bigger chicks!

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Yeah, I wouldn't think there would be any part of a chandelier that would be toxic or leave fumes or anything. If you wanted to be extra extra safe, you could wipe it out like TwoCrows suggested, though. I think it'll do the job just fine. 🙂

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

What if any labels are on the outside of the box? Are there any stains or smells coming from the cardboard? No dust/powdery residue or mold spots or anything? It's most likely fine to use as a brooder if it looks clean and doesn't have any smells in it or anything like that.

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Truly :love I know a lot of people don't enjoy the brooder stage of chickens, but it's probably my favorite stage. I do love my adults, but there's something so compelling about when they're leetle bitties even if they are little dust-making poop machines. 🤭 Oh, well, yuck about the smell...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Yeah, incubators have all that... incubatory stuff to work around. Fans and wires and heating elements, etc. At least heat plates are just a block of plastic! I'd always carefully taken a damp paper towel around the fan and wires in my incubator tops and just kind of blown out as much of the...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Fluffy, I went out in a T-shirt, shorts, and sandals to open my coops and feed the birds this morning. I kept thinking it was a little cooler than I expected compared to the past few mornings, but not bad, and I had no problems getting everyone taken care of without feeling cold, myself. Came in...
