Today I am starting the shoestring method with Celadon Coturnix Quail eggs. I have 10 eggs in the incubator so we will see how it goes. I am once again using the polyester shoestring in this test. The last time I used a cotton shoes string several of my chicks developed crossbeak. While when I...
I really like the big 5lb pickle jars. The 1/2 gallon canning jars just don't regulate the humidity enough. The 1/2 gallon jars work great for port B after lockdown.
Day 19 update: I took the turner out yesterday. 20/21 eggs made it to lockdown. Right now the humidity is at 66%. Is that too high? I pulled out both shoe strings. To try to lower humidity. There are no pips yet so we will see.
Normally without the shoestring method I have chicks hatch on day 18...
On another note:
I have not had to refill incubator #1 water jar since the beginning. It is now day 15 out of 21. The olive jar says it holds 5lbs of olives. It doesn't give the fluid ounces though.
I am aimer for a 45% to 55% humidity on the first stage of incubation. Then after lockdown I plan to raise it to 65%. When chicks begin to hatch the humidity naturally goes up to 75% to 80%.
I have 6 days left on the hatch with the cotton shoe string.
I have 20 days left on the polyester shoe...
Now I have both of my incubators up and running. On 7 days left on my first incubator I woke up this morning and had to add water even though I had the shoe string attached. The water level was a little lower than half so I guess it isn't wicking well with the cotton string. Notice photo#2 on...
The shoestring is in the channel. Originally it was all of the way in the channel. But now I have it only partially in.
I add more water when the humidity gets to 30% and it wicks the rest.
Update: 7 days into the incubation period. I have had to take the cotton shoestring out 2x. Each time I took it out I had to add more water the next morning. As the humidity would go from 56% to 58% all the way down to ~30%.
I live in Oregon. So it rains a lot here. Last time I hatched I don't think it was this cold and rainy. I need to take more photos of the humidity on the incubator that will help for next time.
