Hi all! I purchased 5 baby hens almost a month ago from our local urban farm store, and one (our favorite black australorp, Violet) is sprouting long tail feathers (see images). Any of you able to help me tell if she's actually a Rooster? If so, she'll need a new home, since rooster aren't...
I bought 17 chicks from TSC all pullets, then bought 6 from Rural King that were assured to be all pullets. Well, the 3 New Hampshire reds seem to be pullets but the 3 black Australorps may not all be. One is definitely but the other 2 - not so sure. Also I'm questioning the breed of one of them...
Hello,
I have a black Australorp who is very broody and has been for almost two weeks now. I want raise chicks but want to experience a mother hen raising her young. I just received a late order of fertilized eggs in the mail and I’m just questioning now if I should give them to her or not...
They keep growing, and all are healthy. They have now experienced hard boiled egg and grapes. Loved them both. All seem to be getting a long so far. Brooder needs a second roost added now that the heat plate has been removed.
For size comparison, here they are in the brooder at 2 weeks...
17 chicks across 6 breeds Wow! So much growth! They are turning into great little chickens. Some are straight run, so we still have some male or female mystery going on, but wattles have begun to show up and combs are becoming more obvious. They are shedding so much fluff and dander this...
Last week we picked up 17 chicks at the hatchery. Six different breeds. I posted the brand-new chick pictures (Day 1) and an update here:

Now Here is Week 2 Update with pictures. One chick died, but the hatchery had put in...
Today we drove to pick up a mixed variety of chicks from Eagle Nest Hatchery in OH. 6 different varieties!
Here are some pictures of them - to the best of our ability, we labelled them correctly, but my 11yo and I had to work quick! Interestingly, the light/white Easter Egger is curious...
I got one of my chickens in September from a flea market, it was just a chick and I asked what breed it was, unfortunately the "breeder" (Or just the guy selling them) didn't know what it was, do any of you have any ideas?
(His name is Shadow by the way)
I have 2 gorgeous boys that were hatched in mid-August that need homes. I am near the Twin Falls area in Southern Idaho but I'm willing to travel, especially if I know they'll go to good homes. I have asked local farms and placed ads, but have had no interest shown in them :( Please, if you...
Hi, my roommate and I are college students living in rural/suburban Georgia who decided to take up backyard chicken raising together. We’ve had chickens for about nine months now, and we have 3 fully grown Rhode Island Red hens, and a Buff Orpington, Black Australorp, and Silver Laced Wyandotte...
Hey! So as my exchequer leghorn's tail feathers keep growing so pointy, so does the dreaded feeling that my favorite future layer is going to be a rooster. Any opinions- is Alice actually Alan?
He/she is super outgoing and vocal (no crowing type noises yet though)
Here is Poppy the silver...
Hi. I have four chickens that I got five days ago. I am not asking any questions, I am telling you about my flock. If anyone asks questions I will try to answer them.(sorry if I misspelled something)
Pine, my Black Australorp, is very beautiful because when the sun shines on her black...
This looks like the perfect place for me to learn as much as I can about chickens! We had chickens when I was a kid, but that's been a 'few' years now. My husband and I are buying his parents house and 37 acres, so we're ECSTATIC to finally be able to start growing our hobby farm! First I comes...
Hello! I am an intern with my Cooperative Extension program this summer, and for my "project" I chose to incubate and raise chicks for some 4H kiddos to have projects. I had originally 8 dozen eggs because my AG Agent told me that the hatching/fertility rate wouldn't be high with a smaller...
FREE gorgeous young healthy Black Australorp cockerel chicken must leave his suburban backyard harem ASAP. This March 2107 hatch came home disguised as a pullet but has begun showing-er-crowing his true colors. He's not aggressive, but roosters are banned by our zoning and his morning...
Hi, I bought what i thought was a batch of Cream Crested Legbar eggs from a supplier in pre-loved. All eggs were very light, some slightly blue some white, when they hatch the first chicken was very dark, (this is my first time hatching fertilised eggs) so i thought it must be a female Legbar...
