I bought two straight runs from a hatchery and then 6 straight runs from a local breeder. They were just a few days old when I got them. Now they are 8 weeks and 9 weeks old and it looks like I may have 7 cockerels and 1 pullet. What do you think?
The bantam Brahma, I believe, is a pullet (one row comb of the 3, yellow in color, tail feathers at one week old). The Ayam Cemani began crowing just before he turned six weeks old! The other six I’m guessing are cockerels too. (Polish got red wattles at six weeks as did the bantam Cochin. The showgirl and black Silkie got three spike combs at six weeks old and have thick legs. The blue Silkie (who looks black now) had no tail until about two weeks old. I hope it’s a pullet. No comb spikes like the showgirl & black Silkie. The lavender (?) frizzle Silkie has no spikes on the comb but just this week (8 weeks old) the comb turned purple. The mottled Cochin is a lap chick and I so want it to be a hen! But it got red wattles at 6-7 weeks old.
I only have one bantam Brahma, one bantam Cochin, and one Polish and they are my first of these breeds, so I’ve got nothing to compare them with.
The four Silkies (showgirl included) I know are hard to determine gender on, but maybe the spikes on the two mean two cockerels and the purple and no spikes mean pullets on the other two?
I fully intend to keep all of them as long as they are not mean to us or each other. My plan is to put one rooster in with the hens (7 adults and 5 sexed pullets plus the Brahma, I think). So I think I’ll have 13 hens with one roo in my main coop/run. (It’s a 52 sq ft coop with a 800 sq ft run.)
Today I hope to complete a second coop to house the pullets until they are full sized. It will then hold the bachelor roosters. 210 square feet run with a coop that’s 24 sq feet. The four I think are for sure cockerels are in my chicken tractor now. (8 sq ft coop with 40 sq ft run)
I put the Cochin in with the sexed pullets and two silkies without spiky combs. I think he’ll be the roo for the hens... but I’d rather him be a her! 😆
Thoughts?! Did I really get 7 cockerels from 8 straight runs?! Or is it possible that the lavender/white Silkie is a pullet? What about the Cochin? And the blue/black Silkie?
(Am I correct in saying the spikes on the black Silkie and showgirl mean cockerels? And that red wattles and a comb on the Polish means cockerel?)
I’m attaching photos of them all including a collage of them as babies. (In case the poofs help you guess.) I know the Ayam Cemani is a crowing cockerel. He has pointy feathers too. The others aren’t as easy to figure out! Thanks for your help!
