Hi all

One of our ducks decided to try a little fly and she came back down she grazed her leg on some stone border by the edge of the garden. I've attached some pictures, we used a pet swab and then we tried a wrap with vetericyn and vet wrap but she pulled that off after a bit. We wasn't sure if a wrap or letting it breath was better tbh.

The photo with hay underneath is about an hour after the one with grass underneath.

It seems like a small flap of skin was pulled up and then it bled a bit underneath that.

Just looking for some advice on what to do going forward really as after a search only there isn't too much for simple cuts and grazes, mostly bumblefoot.

We've also removed the pond from their enclosure for today so try and avoid her submerging it.

Thanks!!

Keep her out of the mud /dirt until the wound scabs over. That will help to keep nasty bacteria from getting in. Spraying with Veterycin 2-3x a day will help too. if you can keep her on a clean surface [bedding] it would be better not to wrap. Only other thing you have to be concerned about with an open wound even a small one is flies laying eggs in it. Then you'll have maggots. It looks pretty superficial so should be scabbed over in a few days. Might be a good idea after spraying to let it dry then put some triple antibiotic on it, that might keep the flies away.

Yeah we've refreshed the bedding in their enclosure so it's all fresh and dry. We'll have a look for some triple antibiotic, all 3 are very established fly hunters though so hopefully they eat any that get too close!

Thanks for you help, we are planning to pop their pond back in tomorrow evening so that they can start washing again asap, don't want them to get wet feather. That sound ok?

Adding to Miss Lydia's great advice, after cleaning the wound and spraying with vetericyn, you might spray the wound with aliquid bandage preparation [from your local pharmacy.] that will provide a waterproof protective layer and help with the keeping clean. One example is All-in-One New-Skin® Liquid Spray
