I have a 5 month old silkie Cochin mix, and a 3 month old silkie (frizzle silkie?).

I’m not sure if both of them are starting to grow spurs - I’ve circled it in the picture below.

I really hope that atleast one of them is a pullet 🤞🏻

That’s great news! What would those little bumps be on the inside of their legs?

I can’t feel them on my other silkie pullet but feel them on my black silkie cockerel

Both are pullets.

All chickens have spur bumps.

Some hens grow full spurs! Some will even crow. (quite pathetically, not usually pullets).

Cockerels and roosters will join in the eggs song with the ladies celebration or if they are startled sometimes. Some roosters (usually game breeds) have even been known to sit on a clutch of eggs and basically be broody!

Hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

That makes me so happy to hear! Glad I have some more pullets. I cant have any more roosters 🤣

And that’s interesting to know definitely thought they were both cockerels from the spur bumps.

I’m loving all the support and help from this community 🤍

Spur bumps? I call it a bump...ALL chickens have them. Basically the bone root from which spurs will grow

If male, the spur will grow from there.
In some breeds, females grow them.
In most breeds, older hens who develop hormone issues will grow spurs.
Do you think both are pullets aswell? I hate and love at the same time that I’m in the silkie and Polish birds - but I find them so dang hard to sex.

I didn’t know my current 6 month old silkie was a rooster until he grew flyers. His waddles still haven’t come in and he’s just started crowing

Bearding gene inhibits wattle size.. but with the color, I'm actually a little on the fence about the white/frizzle one.. thinking it could still be a later maturing boy.

The elder one.. is definitely pullet as confirmed by her saddle feathers which on non hen feathered breeds are usually coming in around 12 weeks but well by 16 in most cases..

Some verified roosters have not crowed until 18+ months old. One Silkie boy I hatched was crowing in the brooder at 3.5 weeks old!
