Hi!
I ordered a box of assorted marans from Hoover hatchery. They were all suppose to be female/pullets, but I think I have one that’s looking a little “boyish”. I’ve never had marans, so I wanted to ask!
They are 7-8 weeks of age! This is the one that I’m questioning:

You can't have a rooster where you are?
I can. I may already have one or two others, so I’ll be deciding who stays. This one is actually one of the friendliest.. he stays by my feet and hangs out with us while we clean the coop.

So he maybe a keeper, but I’ve heard they are good protectors of the flock but can also have a mean side to people… I don’t want a mean rooster 🥺

His behavior of hanging around your feet should not be construed as friendly. He is watching you. Guarding his girls. That's not a bad thing, just something for you to be aware of.
I've only had one naughty boy out of a dozen. And I kept him because he was so darn good with the girls and was exactly what I wanted for them. I rehabilitated him and we have a healthy respect for each other. He will be 4 years old in 9 days and has run the flock beautifully. There is a cockerel in the flock that is being groomed by the hens and senior rooster to be second in command.
Don't give up hope to have one of your boys run the flock for you.
