Backyard chicken farmers: How many are there?

Thanks for all your responses. Any suggestions for where to buy chicks if you live in North Carolina?

Just some info I want to share:

If the usual minimum of 25 chicks is too many for you, you can order a minimum of 3 through mypetchicken.com.

I just received my 6 Red Stars through them. Didn't cost anymore per chick than ordering any other way.
They use a heat pad and a smaller box with cushioning designed to keep the chicks safe.

Mypetchicken is affiliated with Meyer's Hatchery. So that's the source of the chicks.

I found the site through a "google alert" and they are a pleasure to deal with.

I have a small property on Long Island, 50' x 100', so can't have a large flock.

Backyard chicken keeping is becoming increasingly popular, both in America and across the pond. Diana said that in the Netherlands it is quite common to have backyard chickens, and in the UK the estimates for the number of households with chickens range from 200,000 to 500,000 (out of a population of 60m), and a large proportion of those keeping chickens in the city, with thanks to www.omlet.co.uk

The cities of Seattle and Madison actively encourage chicken keeping -

Not to mention, membership of this site keeps growing!
