I would presume they mean what causes silkieness, though I can't say for sure.

I've never even heard that question before! Maybe they are looking for a description of Silkie feathers???

Maybe, though it does confuse me why they would word it like that. Idk

Silkiness is caused by a lack of barbicels, which hold the feather together and make it smooth.

Its not that unusual. What age group is the question asked in?

Silkied feathers are caused by a lack of barbules that result in the feather not being held together. It's a recessive trait and can show up in birds other than silkies

"SILKIE: Refers to the semiplume character of the feathers of the Silkie fowl in which the shafts are very thin and the barbs are very long, very soft and fluffy, which have no holding power and no locking arrangement; structurally similar to the fluff of a normal feather."

I was in 4H for quite a few years, this one tended to stump people cause the feather type is called the same as the breed
