Chickens Not Allowed, Going to Anyway.

I live in Chandler and what I read in an online article is that the city is supposedly going to put it on the agenda next year. Would LOVE to be there with you and gather people so that I can have chickens in my back yard. :0)

Might want to go to the Arizona thread and post there.

Email the chandler city council members and mayor and let them know you are a voting chandler resident and want chickens allowed. They have sent this back to zoning to reconsider so they need the emails from voters

I'm in Chandler, AZ and am also not allowed to have chickens.  I would like to try and change the law, but not sure where to start.

It appears they are "unofficially" talking about this issue now. http://www.chandleraz.gov/content/20130328_1a.pdf

MAYOR TIBSHRAENY read the next question. “What is the City doing to encourage community
gardens and other forms of urban agriculture such as the keeping of chickens.”
MR. ZEDER said there was a Council subcommittee that met regarding “urban chickens”. Mr.
Zeder said staff is researching this issue in hopes of bringing back a proposal for the Council in
2013. With regard to urban gardens, he reported the City did work with a non-profit group over
the past year to lease a piece of city property for this purpose.

Is anyone still reading this thread involved in any of this??? I'd be happy to join the fight!!! :)

I'm also from Glendale. Their is a city meeting next week and they said that I can fill out the open speaker card at the beginning and I'll have a chance to address it towards the end of the meeting. The meeting is April 18th at 7pm. I'm planning on attending and I'd love to have more support there. If you'd like to meet up before hand to discuss our points on why chickens should be considered pets, please let me know. I hope you (or any other Glendale residents) will join me!

I'm from way down in deep South Texas, Harlingen to be specific. Our neck of the woods has been annexed and de-annexed so many times that I've lost count. Luckily, before they tried to make us city a 3rd time, we already had a miniature Shetland Pony and about 15 chicks. From that point, we kinda just pretended that they multiplied, haha! Because we already had them, all our animals were grandfathered in. In reality, I'm pretty sure we've added quite a few hens to our little family. I don't think anyone noticed the single Cayuga duck we have running around! :)

As anyone on this list now knows, Chandler City Council voted down the backyard chicken initiative. I had been cooesponding with the City Council members via email. I did mention that I would be moving to Gilbert - where a person can keep 10 backyard chickens if they did not agree to make this officialy LEGAL. While that did get their attention, it did not do any good with the "good ol boys." Now, I am currently searching for a home - maybe out in SanTan. I'm tired of being kept under the thumb of a bunch of dreadful old men. There are two women on the council. The one I voted for Nora Ellen voted to allow chickens. She is great! AND as of 12-31-13 Chandler City Council voted themselves in a 37% RAISE IN PAY! If that is not the heighth of arrogance I don't know what is. Have to go now.... I'm busy packing!!!!

I lived in Glendale, AZ and was allowed to have as many hens as I wanted, but no roosters - maybe it's because my lot was large - about 20,000 ft.

Sonoran Silkies just posted the following on a separate thread, title Arizona Homegrown Freedom Act --- Make sure you get out to support it on Feb 3rd and hopefully the law will be changed.

(Homegrown Freedom Act) Arizona Senate Bill 1151

This State Bill will return to everyone the right to own fowl on single family detected homes all across Arizona. Senate Bill 1151 will override city/town zoning and restrictions that prohibit you from owning fowl.

The Senate Committee will be hearing this bill on February 3rd @ 2:00 pm (Please arrive 45 minutes early to have time to signup/register in support of the Bill & also for the right to speak if wanted) If you want to speak please make a short and to the point comment so others can have the same opportunity.
At 1:30 pm Senator Farnsworth will make a special request to introduce Backyard Farmers Untied to the Committee.

Senator Farnsworth will be speaking on behalf of our Bill and we will have room for up to 6 other speakers if time allows. We must get our Bill Past by this Committee on Feb 3rd for it to move forward to a Senate Vote. This will be our only chance to be heard until the Bill gets sent to the House of Representative.

We need everyone that can to come and attend. We need to show a presence and to override the opposition 100's to 1. This is how we will get it passed by showing our support. If you don't show it could fail (so if you want this we need you there. Don’t think others have you covered because that is a false positive. We need you, Yes YOU.)

Please print the Image attached and bring it to show your support.
We are counting on all of you. We have made it this far so lets push it all the way to the Governors Desk for a signature.

Please come visit the Fan Page to get a detailed map and direction to the Capitol.
