Compost

I don't know what forum to put this under but how long do I have to wait till so I can put it on plants?

6-months is considered adequate if you are talking about your chicken droppings..

I pile it up for a few months before placing it around my flowers.. Now lately I have been spreading the pine poo out around my rose of sharon bushes and they are holding up OK. I know the pine draws out nutrients and the poo is *hot* and will burn the plants.These are my weed bushes,so I am ok with whatever happens.

I use the smell test... if there's no ammonia smell and it looks like compost, I do it. My chickens work the compost pile for bugs, so it doesn't take too long... maybe 4-6 weeks?

I have no idea where to put my compost questions. Somebody advice, please!!

How do you store/create compost? Do you mix manure with other things do make the process happen?
How do you know when to put it on your garden or lawn and how much?

i forgot to mention, we always have a ton of wood shavings mixed in with our chicken poop, does this slow down or hinder the process?
