Conservation of Brown Red Japanese Bantam

Interesting how they change color!
Im' keeping track of every chick too, to see how they change and to get an idea for what to look in the early weeks when I breed for a color. There are not many documentation showing how chicks change from down to juvenile to adult feathering, and on top it is very individual even in one color scheme.

Some of you guys know I have had several skunks come through and devastate my grow out flock. I lost the two youngest Japanese and the brown red hen during theses attacks. I still have my five oldest luckily so breeding plans have changed this breeding season. I am for sure keeping the brown red pullet I hatched but I don’t know if I’ll keep any of the 3 boys I hatched. I may end up breeding the pullet back to the original brown red roo and go from there. If any of you guys see a potential with any of the three grow out boys I have right now please let me know!

Hey, can I get your opinion to this chick? I had a "egg surprise", born black with a light spot under the chin, and now at 6 weeks the hackles have a light brown lace. Is this a basis for brown-red?

Most likely that is brown red, as extended black-based chicks would typically have more white than the chick you described.
