My Coop
Despite rain (and one freak ice storm) every blinkin weekend for 3 weeks our coop and run is (nearly) done :ya:th(minus nest boxes, but birds are only 7 weeks old). Coop is 6x10 with 2x6 brooder/ICU when needed (panels can be removed). Run is 8x 24. I have 11 birds now, 5 are meat and will be culled at 12 wks. 6 chicks coming in late June, so Im hoping to house 8-10 over winter.
Today we completed the brooder (more chicks coming in June) and a second roost/poop board. The HC was a B to work with but having a handy dandy cordless grinder made it so much better.
I still have to get nest boxes and install an electric fence. Run is like Fort Knox. (DH) even made a portal door/escape hatch for when chickens are out free ranging. (when Im home).
They seem to be happy birds, and we are very happy that (most) work is done. Brews were earned and well deserved.
I thank BYC and its members for all the advice, resources and expertise..could not have done it without all you fine ppl. 🥰

Nice run!
Love the hollow log sections.

Can we see more of outside and inside of coop?
of course. all of my pics did not load so hear goes.
The coop is a one piece fiberglass utility house that I got for free. The roof overhand was minimal so HD and I cut 12sf ventilation and covered with HWC. We build a second roof with 24 in overhang and metal roof leftover from our home build.

absolutely. I tried to post an article with pics. forgot to hit the save draft tab and poof..all gone. 😞
pics coming.

one pc 6x10 fiberglass unit was being tossed out by a utility so we asked and got it for free (I like free). The unit has 1 inch foam insulation sandwiched between fiberglass layers. The existing roof had low slope and no overhang to speak of do we cut 12sf permanent ventilation in existing roof, added HWC then DH built a second roof with 18 inch overhangs and metal roofing.

DH leveled the block foundation and moved the coop in place. A deck sits under the unit and is attached to the fiberglass floor.

I covered the floor and poop boards with vinyl. I got that from Lowes discontinued stuff for about $7. 🧐

While DH was building run I completely the inside. Under the poop boards I built removable panels with HC for a 2x6 brooder/ICU. I have 6 new chicks coming mid June. I’m going with deep pine and poplar bedding that I chipped from our property. I have two 14x16 sturdy crates I will use as nest boxes, probably in left near corner, about a foot off the floor. chicks are 9 wks old so I have time.

Run had to be constructed uphill from coop.. there was no other way with our prevailing winds. The run is completely covered with metal roofing and sheds water to the periphery. HC encloses the run and there is a 2 ft predator apron covered with driveway rock and graded out another foot for roof water drainage.

Added a few branches as roosts, a couple hollow logs where they hide. My intent was to have deep litter in the run but it never gets moisture with the roof. I’ll still toss in greens and browns.. the chickens like to scratch it up.

I screwed all the roosts to something after a chick jumped on a branch with 5 roosting birds and it slipped. They were not entertained by that stunt.
To the right of the waterer is an escape portal for entering the run from the side when free ranging. The portal and people door at the far end stays open when I’m around to watch. The coop itsrlf has a people door thats not pictured. It’s opposite the roost level viewing windows.
All doors snd windows have HC, barrel locks with carabiners. I do not close my pop door..I feel it is that secure (and its light until 10:30 now :th
All in all it took 2 months to get this done. Lots of weather delays.
This weekend I’m installing an electric fence. Coyotes have taken several of the neighbors chickens, and something big broke into their feed shed (bear probably). Worst I have is my pups (who I don’t trust with chx) and a cow moose cruising past the coop with her calf..I prefer them to be at a much longer distance away. hope to get pics of them.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the show. I modeled a lot of my build after Aart’s article about building up high, predator proofing tips to name a few. I took knowledge from so many members that I feel, for a first time build, it is mostly perfect IMO. Let me know your thoughts.

Brilliant!!

Surprised there are not larger overhang on the run roof.
Will there be water running under the coop?
