Are you familiar with Dune? I don’t want to post spoilers, and thus the reason I didn’t elaborate about the list. The only people who repackaged the ideas and made it new was Disney by appropriation and j.k. Rowling by straight up copying
But yes, Star Wars is a straight copy of Dune. Not in plot but in characters, concepts, and imagery.
For example, the Jedi order and the Jedi mind trick are straight ripoffs of a religious order from Dune with Force-like abilities, including the ability to override a person’s will through voice commands.
Dune came about a decade before Star Wars. The similarities behind the two franchises are so similar that I did some research and Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, was very vocal about Lucas’ appropriation of his works and accused Lucas of doing just that on many occasions.
Herbert apparently kept writing Dune novels into the 1980s and in one of the last ones he slipped in a dig at Lucas where Herbert wrote that in Dune’s universe, a “three P-O” for a slang word for person who surrounds themselves a cheap ripoffs or copies of valuable items. So if you’re a person who surrounds yourself with forged artwork, you’re a “three P-O.”
Of course, that’s a jab at C3PO from Star Wars and is saying that Star Wars is a cheap imitation of Dune.
I’m a fanatical Star Wars nerd. But I think Herbert was right. Dune is the more compelling universe and Star Wars is clearly derivative.
