I'll add to the anecdotal evidence on DE. I recently took our Doberman to get her yearly check up. She was worm-free and heartworm free with no wormer, no heartworm preventative for over a year. She was spending 2/3 of the day outside, every day in coastal South Carolina. Mosquito population here is vicious in the summer months.
