Do chickens know?

Do chickens know what the sex of other chickens are? Because I have like 8 wk old chicken who mounted and tried to mate another. This other chicken is a silkie and I am particularly interested in its gender. Does this mean its a girl?

I thought so at one point, but I have seen young cockerels grab and even try to mount others that turn out to be cockerels. Usually they target females, but sometimes hormones get the best of them lol.

On the other hand, I have never had an older cockerel try to mount a young male, but they will try to mount a very young and immature female.

yes all chickens knows each other who is male or female
