this afternoon I saw one of our pekins catch a mouse and eat it

I've never heard of ducks eating mice, is this normal ?

Oh yes, they get mice, voles, toads, snakes, etc. One of the least endearing qualities of ducks to me. Especially with toads, they eat bugs, so I hate to lose them.

well that's cool :) I know my sisters chickens kill mice, just never heard of ducks doing it
ever since building the duck house, we've had a family of mice move under the duck house. I was concerned they'd get out of control, but the next door neighbours cat got one last week and the duck got another yesterday. So seems like they will keep the problem they caused under control

luckily we don't generally get toads in Toowoomba, because I wouldn't want the ducks near them, because the Qld cane toad is poisonous.... kills dogs, even snakes - plus they are huge anyway

Watch out for rats, though. They are known for eating sleeping ducks feathers and bills at night. And leaving them alive. I dont think that mice can do that though.
