Dust Bathing

My pullets (11 weeks) will try and dust bathe on the floor of their coop, so i made them a dust bath in a shallow pan with wood ashes and diamataceous earth -- they want nothing to do with it. They'll walk through it and around it but won't get in it. Any ideas how I can help them figure out what it is? or maybe they just don't like it? Thanks,

Try some fine sand. They seem to prefer that.

You can also scatter some grains in the sand to get them interested in scratching about in it.
