I’ve checked the threads and have seen great advice for why to use grit, advice on baby chick grit, how to use grit but didn’t see much on actual Holy Grail products for our layers. I’m new to this backyard chicken world and I’d rather go based off of experience to keep my chicks safe, happy, and not break the bank.

Soooo, fave grit products in 3, 2, 1….thank you!

Brand isn't important. What matters is getting grit that's hard and sharp and big enough to get the job done. Granite is probably the preferred stone in the US.

As far as size, I keep all 3 sizes on hand. For standard birds roughly 8 weeks+ through adulthood, I offer half grower (sometimes labeled pullet) and half layer (sometimes labeled hen) grit in a container for them to pick out at their leisure. Some birds prefer smaller pieces, some larger.

I purchase a bag of grit at my local farm store, they only have one brand. I use this in the winter months when the flock isn’t free ranging. During the warmer months when they are free ranging, they find their own grit.
