February 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Everybody must be busy today...not many people on.
I got 7 out of 8 in lockdown due Monday from Hawaii. The 4 out of 5 that hatched a week ago from my silkies are getting to stay together and go to a new home tomorrow. I'd rather do that than separate one from the others.
Soon as I find out results from biopsy from surgery earlier in week I will get more eggs to incubate!
Busy is right! Glad they are staying together, it seems better that way. Hope your biopsy results are good. I have two I’m waiting on, as well.

All 6 of the 6 that made it to lockdown hatched! The one Swedish Flower was not a sure thing. She clearly tore a blood vessel during hatching. The inside of the shell and all the feathers from throat to vent were smeared with blood. Her waste sac remained firmly attached to her through her umbilicus, and she spent two hours dragging it around behind her in the incubator before it dried enough that I could safely cut it. Even her feathers took so much longer to dry than all the others. The Isbar born an hour later was fluffed up before she was.

After transfer to the brooder, the other five kept booting her out from under the plate. I put her in the toe of a sock that I split lengthwise and tied around my neck. Then zipped up my fleece and she snuggled in and fell asleep. After a few hours and lots of lovely little trills, she started wanting out, so I moved her back to the brooder. After that, every time they kicked her out, she puffed up and went right back in. Now she’s doing great. I’m calling her Lucky.

And now, fluffy chicks!

OMGeeze they are darling. She's a little fighter after all of that!

well i already have some pips in the shells, but one of them pipped on the bottom and is leaking yolk. i am relatively new to hatching, so is this normal? or should i take it out? i also have a second incubator if i need to isolate some/move them away.View attachment 3005925

ok update: i moved it to my other incubator because the liquid coming out didn't seem safe for the others, especially because there was a lot. i switched it with the shower running so hopefully i didn't shrink wrap the rest of them 🤞 i don't think the leaky egg is going to hatch at all, but it has its own bator now so i don't have to worry about it exploding on the others.

Good that you moved it. I have never seen this, but it was able to pip so maybe it can still survive? Fingers crossed!🙂

Congrats, they are adorable!

Okay, here are the chick portraits. Images were taken on my lovely chicken apron, and these gorgeous little birds each waited to poop until I moved them back to the brooder. Yay!

And, finally here’s Lucky, Swedish Flower #2! Although, Lucky may end up being Lucky Little Piper, because she sure reminds us all of the little sandpiper baby from the Pixar short “Piper”.
