Fowl pox - how long to quarantine?

Hi all,

One of my chickens recently caught fowl pox and became very poorly. She was sleeping all day every day, not eating or drinking, her comb fell over completely, stopped laying eggs. One of the scabs started in her nostril too and couldn't breathe out of that side as it swelled up. I really didn't think she was going to make it so I brought her home and she actually stayed in my kitchen for a few days - she was that poorly she didn't move at all.

Anyway - long story short she's doing much better now, however she still has the scabs. At what point can I put her back with the others? Also, when do chickens resume egg laying after an illness?

Can you post any pictures of her scabs? Fowl pox is a virus spread by mosquitoes, and usually you will see others with the scabs. The scabs themselves are infectious, and when they fall off, they can become powdery and be inhaled. Some people paint scabs with Betadine to help them dry up. The scabs can linger and be contagious for 6 months or so. Once a chicken gets pox, they are immune to the type of pox for life. It probably would not help to keep her separated because they may attack her after being out of the flock for so long.

These are the only photos I managed to get (they are from two weeks ago). My concern is that I have some young chickens and also a muscovy on a nest and because she was so poorly I'm worried my others won't be so lucky.

Did they ever start laying again? Mine have fowl pox and are recovering, but no eggs! I can’t find an answer to this question anywhere. How long till they start laying again.

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. My chicken made a full recovery and none of the others got any symptoms. She is now back laying also :)
