So we cannot free range our chickens so we have a coop and are building a run. They are just pullets now (2m old) and I am working on some trays of sprouts using outside dirt that has alot of rocks from the yard. I am guessing if there are marble and golfball sized rocks in there (I did pick out the big ones/golfball ones) that there is plenty of small rocks mixed in as well, but I am assuming I should still buy some grit?

Do they keep the same grit in forever or do they trade it out or what?

I mix one pound of grit with forty pounds of feed. They eat the grit with the feed. Hope this helps!!!

Grit acts as grind stones and does wear out and is passed out. With your stony yard they should be able to find enough grit. However they will deplete it eventually. If it looks like they have it all gone you can add some by either scattering it or placing it is a dish on the side. A little bit takes a long time to wear out, before they need more, will know they need it and seek it out.
