Is chick grit necessary or can I use poultry grit? My store is out of chick grit. My girls are 5 weeks.

Chicks are not able to swallow regular grit, until around 9 weeks old....But, until you get some chick grit, you could put out the regular grit.
The chicks should pick out pieces that are small enough for them to swallow.

If your chicks are only eating their chick feed they are okay without grit. Once you give them other 'treats', or if they free range, then they need it. Although, while free ranging they may well find their own perfect chick-sized grit on the ground as needed.

Use a colander to sift out the smaller pieces.
