(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I hatched my first set of chickens last summer. Leghorn, Easter Eggers, Americana and Lace Wyandotte. I purchased a couple more from TSC: Rhode Island Red and Sapphire Gem.
I hatched another batch of eggs this spring to add Cream Legbar to the mix.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
40, some are roosters and we will cull them in October. I need to be at the 30 mark for my run and coop space.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Rhode Island Red, Americana, Easter Eggers, Buff Orphingtons, Lace Wyandotte, Cream Legbar, Sapphire Gem, Barred Rock, Dominique, Leghorn
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Watching them be chickens. I let them free range on the weekends and evenings. I love their personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy gardening, kayaking, boating and spending time with family and friends.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have been married for almost 20 years and have three children. I am a daycare provider. I have two dachshunds, two cats and we also have a rabbit, hamster, a gecko and fish.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I was looking up information about chickens when I found BYC. It is a great place to talk about chickens, ask questions and see how other people are managing their flocks.
