Hi! I'm in Oatmeal, Texas (http://www.oatmealtexas.com) and I am just getting into incubation.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am relatively new having only kept chickens (as an adult) for the past year.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have 7 chickens (5 hens and 2 roosters) of various kinds and all are laying.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have a small variety picked for egg color (green, white, brown and chocolate). I also have ducks.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Google

I am looking forward to sharing info on incubation and raising birds.

Thanks!

Yeah - about 100+ years ago. It's likely a bad translation of the early 1800's settler...

The town name is either an alteration of the name of a Mr. Othneil, who owned the first gristmill in the area, or a supposed translation of the name Habermill (Haber is a German dialect word for Hafer, "oats"). http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/OO/hro8.html

In the 70's a local man created the 'Oatmeal Festival' as a tourist attraction. But the festival is actually in Bertram 8 miles away. Currently only about 25 people live out here (according to the 2000 census).
