My French BCM are quite old (5 years) and took a rather long winter break.I really like that dark brown egg. I read that hens that produce dark brown eggs don't lay quite as many as standard layers because the eggs travel more slowly through the oviduct. Have you found that to be true?
My experience regarding the egg colour is as follows:
- depending on genetics
- depending on amount of eggs
- depending on feed and water ingredients
- depending on health/internal parasites
I once had some BCM hens that were laying almost black which I found not appealing at all, see the eggs on the left in the picture below.
But I much prefer the beautiful reddish brown with darker spots.
