How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I really like that dark brown egg. I read that hens that produce dark brown eggs don't lay quite as many as standard layers because the eggs travel more slowly through the oviduct. Have you found that to be true?

My French BCM are quite old (5 years) and took a rather long winter break.

My experience regarding the egg colour is as follows:

• depending on genetics
• depending on amount of eggs
• depending on feed and water ingredients
• depending on health/internal parasites

I once had some BCM hens that were laying almost black which I found not appealing at all, see the eggs on the left in the picture below.
But I much prefer the beautiful reddish brown with darker spots.

But my beautiful Barred Rock was dead under the coop…stiff as a board, no injuries apparent. Wonder if she had a heart attack…poor honey.

10, eggs today. They didn't like the soggy weather.

We also got rain. Can't believe I got clean eggs! Way to go ladies!

3 today, from Mei, Juin and Juillet.

It took Mei all day to lay, and she missed both excursions outside. I felt bad for her, but she hates cold windy conditions anyway, so she may have been happier to be in the warm dry nest box.

Thought I had three, but when I checked after dark there was one more egg in the box.

The streaks are from Blu-kote. I put some on my Sussex' vents last night so I could identify purebred Speckled Sussex eggs.

Only 7 today. Hasn’t been that low in awhile. I wonder if they are feeling the death of their flock mate.

8 eggs. All of the ladies laid one today for the first day in the year.
