We got our first TV, and it was such a Big Deal that I decided to sneak upstairs and see what was on at 2am.

Either static or colored stripes was playing on every channel.

I remember having Sadie Hawkins dances.

Buying Archie comics two for a quarter at the local drug store.

And it was called a Drug Store, not a pharmacy.

I remember seat belts with heavy metal buckles. They were HOT to the touch in summer.

On 9/11, we turned off the tv at 8:45 am, right before the disaster. I first heard about it on NPR radio, while driving at lunch time. Then couldn't stop watching the tv coverage, horrible. Can't bring myself to watch it now. Or Vietnam war footage, saw too much then.
And when Secretariat won the Belmont race by 31 lengths, we were overseas, and heard about it on the radio. And I was amazed, thought the report said 13 lengths, stunning enough! WOW!!!

At that time I worked for two chiropractors. It was our late opening day, 1pm-6pm. One of the doctors brought in a small TV, set it up at the front desk. We watched it all afternoon, as did our patients as they came for their appointments.

I can't watch footage of the planes hitting or the towers coming down anymore, it still hurts thinking about the people who died.
