Both types were called hobby horses.
Probably we galloped all over tarnation due to the boundless energy kids have, then multiply that by all the Kool Aid and Super Sugar Puffs we consumed and there you go.

I think we called the other kind rocking horses - I always wanted one but never got one.
So I had the broomstick kind, and the kind outside grocery stores that were mechanical and would ride for a few minutes on a coin in slot basis.
